Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior". Neuehrenfeld is a quarter of prestigious residential houses, most of them erected end of the 19th and early 20th century. To the north the quarter borders to the large (then municipal) abbatoirs, that opened in 1895 to supply the population of the growing city with meat products. To find just opposite the (former) slaughter houses is this massive "office building", erected 1920/21. It was named "Herkules Haus" in the 1920s.
