The present church was built around 1200 as a Romanesque brick building. The builder was Heinrich von Gardelegen, who lived at Gardelegen Castle from 1186 to 1192. Later there were alterations and extensions in the Gothic style. The nave was rebuilt as a hall church at the end of the 15th century, and the tower was rebuilt after 1500. Towards the end of the Second World War, in March 1945, the church was largely destroyed by bombs. It was not until 1991 that restoration work began, during which the spire was re-roofed. Of the church, the 54-meter-high tower and the choir are preserved, of the nave only the exterior walls and the round pillars in the interior are standing.

The choir was probably built after a town fire in 1306. Bartholomaeus Rieseberg, a student of Martin Luther, worked at the church from 1539 and introduced the Reformation. On Ascension Day 1658, a large part of the tower collapsed during the service, damaging the roof and the interior of the church; 22 people died. The tower was rebuilt and supplemented with another floor and a baroque dome with a double lantern.

A storage room was mentioned in 1241 on the site of today's town hall. In front of the western side, cellar rooms with barrel vaults from the previous building from the first half of the 14th century were excavated in 1999. A new building was built between 1526 and 1552 after the city fire of 1526 had destroyed the previous building. From 1914 to 1917 a renovation took place in which, among other things, east and west gables were added and the arcades were opened to the arcades.
