Brenken - St. Kilian

The cross in the wall in the tower could be the work of a carver. Maybe an apprentice, who just started, but the rough unfinished figure is a graffiti. See the elbows! I´m sure!

On the right a knight (?) in a castle, holding up his sword. Left is the bishop again. A martyr, the head is just falling down. Maybe this is a connection to St. Kilian, who was murdered. As he is often shown with crook and sword, maybe both carvings show him.

This cannot be a "model" of the St. Kilian-church, where the font is in now. The church is younger than the font. In case what is next to the head of the animal climbing up a hill is part of a nimbus - it can oly be a sheep.

The font in St. Kilian was carved around 1170 in the grey local sandstone. As the most people of his time in Europe, the sculptor probably never had seen a lion. So the four animals here look a bit like frogs, but they are - lions. Here you see (over the lions) three bishops.

The parish church St. Kilian in Brenken, about 20kms south east of Paderborn. Built within the 13th century. As the fortified tower is much older, it may be, that the church we see today had a carolingian ancestor.
