In 720 Charlemagne´s great grandmother Bertrada had founded the Prüm Abbey, from where in 830 the Benedictine monastery "Novum Monasterium" was founded here. The abbey, owning the relics of Chrysanthus und Daria, developed into a pilgrimage destination and all around a settlemt grew. Zwentibold, illegitime son of Emperor Arnulf and King of Lotharingia, granted the abbey a minting privilege in 898. Under the Counts of Jülich a castle got erected around 1300 - and the town flourished. Today large half timbered houses line the streets. A few years ago, when the rural exodus left empty shops, a "city outlet center" was founded - and brought at least more tourists to Bad Münstereifel. www.cityoutletbadmuenstereifel.com/

The oldest part dates to the 14th century, but it got enlarged and got finally completed in 1551.
