Nigg Stone

22 Jan 2025 25
The parish church is an 18th-century building on an early Christian site dating back to the 8th century. The stone was probably made in the second half of the 8th century. It is not known where it was erected. The oldest sources say that it was found in the cemetery right next to the parish church of Nigg. The stone is about 2.2 meters high and one meter wide. The hemispherical ornamentation, which conveys spatial depth, is known from a drawing in the Lindisfarne Gospels. There are further similarities to the high crosses from Ireland. The scene on the reverse is extremely complicated and made even more difficult to interpret by deliberate defacement, probably done after the Reformation. Among the depictions are two Pictish symbols: an eagle above a Pictish animal, a sheep, the oldest evidence of a ,European triangular harp, and hunting scenes.

The scene in the gable section can be interpreted as depictions from the life of the desert father Paul. He and Antonius studying the scriptures together; the bird coming from above that brought him bread; the two palm trees that offered him protection in his desert dwelling; the two lions that are said to have buried Paul in the desert after his death. Everything as Jerome had told it in the legend of Paul that he wrote. Alternatively, an event from the life of Columban could be considered, in which, as described in the hagiography written by Adomnan, he was asked by Cronan, a bishop from Munster in Ireland, to break bread with him. The two dogs under the table could refer to (Mk 7:28 EU), according to which something should also fall for them from the bread that is eaten at it

The stone is about 2.2 meters high and one meter wide. The hemispherical ornamentation, which conveys spatial depth, is known from a drawing in the Lindisfarne Gospels. There are further similarities to the high crosses from Ireland. Since the stone shows both Christian motifs and, with the Pictish Beast, at least one of the classic Pictish symbols, it is both a Pictish symbol stone and a cross slab.

Port Elphinstone - Broomend of Crichie

The Broomend of Crichie is a henge monument containing the remains of a stone circle and a Pictish symbol stone that was moved here. Old records show that the Broomend was once connected to a second, but now lost, stone circle by a stone avenue. It represents the remains of a ceremonial centre used from the late 3rd millennium BC until the Iron Age. The henge, the oldest part, is still recognisable, measuring around 35 m in diameter with two opposite passages in the rampart and several interruptions in the ditch. Today there are three menhirs within the henge. Two of the stones belong to a disturbed stone circle that was once part of the henge, consisting of six stones. The central Pictish symbol stone was ploughed out and erected here in the 19th century. It is engraved with a crescent moon and a hybrid creature. The reddish symbol stone could have been part of a double row of stones that led through the henge.

Maiden Stone

The Maiden Stone (aka "Drumdurno Stone") is a Pictish standing stone. It is about 3.2 metre high stone slab with carved Pictish and Christian symbols, which is dated to the 8th or 9th century. The stone shows considerable damage. One side shows several depictions that are also common on other Pictish symbol stones: a comb, a mirror, a so-called Pictish beast as well as a stylised centaur and other mythological creatures. The other side has early Christian motifs, including a cross, as well as the image of a man between two sea creatures (Jonah and two whales?).
