Caltanissetta - Lugaro

13 Nov 2022 1 46
Caltanissetta's origins can be traced back to 406 BC, when Carthagen troops established a fort at the site, later called Castra Nicia. After the Second Punic War, Castra Nicia came under Roman rule. In AD 829, the city was occupied by the Saracens. The settlement was captured by the Normans in 1086. A charter was granted to the town in accordance with Robert Guiskard´s son Roger Borsa's vast plan for the urbanisation of Sicily, and the urban plan that is still in evidence today was laid out. After the Norman occupation the city was under the rule of the Hohenstaufen, the Anjou and the Aragonese kings. It was here that Frederick II of Sicily was proclaimed king. The area is around agricultural. The company Averna, which produces Amaro among other things, has its headquarters here. However, there are only a few industrial jobs in central Sicily, so rural exodus is also an issue here. I have already uploaded a lot of photos previously taken in Sicily. Now I will add only a few. Allègre - Château d'Allègre

24 Jan 2020 5 2 172
A settlement, named Grazac, is known here since 946. It got later named after the noble House of Alègre, who erected a large castle overlooking the village, that was prosperous and even held fairs and markets here. Today Allègre, still known for the (now ruined) castle only has a population of less than 1000 and suffers from the rural exodus. The castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century by the Lords of Allegre. Morinot de Tourzel, who held Barony of Allègre from 1385 on, undertook repair and construction work on the surrounding wall. Later the castle got enlarged and with its 23 towers, it was one of the most substantial in the region. It was ravaged by fire in 1698, and despite attempts to rebuild the following years, the castle did never recover from the disaster It was sold in the 18th century. The owners used the castle like a stone quarry - and only a few ruins are left on the mountain.

Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille

16 Feb 2018 126
Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille is known by musicians as this is the place of the "Festival du Monastier" (aka "Festival de Cuivres"), a great meeting centered around "brass". 40 concerts - in 7 days (!!) - in a town with a population of below 2000. Volunteers and a supporting community of music lovers make this festival possible. But walking through the town, the marks of the rural exodus are clearly visible. Le Puy en Velay with its large supermarkets is not even 20kms north, so the many shops here went out of business.

La Rochebeaucourt-et-Argentine - Boulangerie and C…

13 Dec 2017 167
In 1827 the villages La Rochebeaucourt and Argentine merged to La Rochebeaucourt-et-Argentine. Mid 19th century La Rochebeaucourt-et-Argentine was a prosperious village with a population of about 1200. Meanwhile the number of people living here has sunken to about 300. The exodus has left marks. Empty shops line the streets. Gone forever.

Fabrezan - Alimentation

13 Feb 2017 230
Fabrezan lost about half of its population within a century. Today about 1200 people live here, not enough to keep this little shop going. New supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl attract more and more customers - and so there is no future for small businesses and shops like this. - Fermeture définitive..
