The parish church Saint-Martin, erected near the banks of the river Aude in the 12th/13th century, was for a very short time a cathedral. In 1316, after the Albingensian Crusade, Pope John XXII created a small diocese, centered here. Following a sucessful protest of the local nunnery the "cathedra" was moved the Alet in 1318.
