In 1668, Franciscans got the property of the Cistercian monastery of St. Petri, which was closeddissoluted during the Reformation. The monastery church dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua was built between 1670 and 1678. A century later it was vaulted and then refurnished in the Rococo style. It survived the secularization of the monastery in 1824. As part of a large-scale renovation to mark the 300th anniversary in 1978, the late Baroque appearance of the interior was largely restored.

Bispingen - St. Antonius

Bispingen is a small town with (including the small hamlets around) has a population of about 6500. Bispingen is located in the center of the "Lüneburger Heide" (Lüneburg Heath), a large nature reserve of heath, geest and woodland. Over centuries this was a poor area, where "Heidschnucken" a local breed of sheep were held, a kind of forgotten hinterland between Hannover and Hamburg. Meanwhile due to the unique landscape this is a popular tourist destination.
There is a church named "Ole Kerk" (old church) that since 1353 was the only church in the area for a very long time. People from all hamlets around walked to this church on sunday. When the population grew end of the 19th century this church became to small and just about 200 metres apart the new neo Gothic St. Antonius church was built in 1908. Unfortunately St. Antonius was locked, as the old baptismal from 1406 was moved from the old to the new church.
