Cymer Abbey

Cymer Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey that was founded in 1198 as a daughter monastery of Cwmhir Abbey and thus belonged to the filiation of the primary abbey of Clairvaux. The Welsh favoured the cistercians because of their independence from the Anglo-Norman nobility and their expertise in taming wild wilderness. Though Cymer Abbey remained small and insignificant. It operated a stud farm. In 1388 there were only five monks left in the abbey. Only ruins of the abbey remain.
