Bevagna, known since Etruscian times and part of the Papal States from 778 on, was burnt down by Barbarossa´s troop in 1152, but was even then economically strong enough, to have three churches built in the center of town end of the 12th century. One of them is San Silvestro, located opposite of San Michele on the Piazza F. Silvestri.
It was erected in 1195 as well by the architects Rodolfo and Binello.
The façade is somehow incomplete. The large building to the left ist the Palazzo dei Consoli (1270).

A settlement existed here already in Bronze age, pre-Roman times the Umbrian people had a town here, named Ikuvium. After the Roman conquest the town gained importance. The Roman theatre here is the second-largest surviving in the world.
Gubbio became very powerful in the Middle Ages, when Gubbio sent 1000 knights to fight in the First Crusade. Later the city was engaged in wars against the surrounding towns of Umbria.
Gubbio is built on the very steep slope. Lifts convey the tourists up to the Piazza Grande from the valley floor. Walking up to the cathedral, looking down to the Palazzo dei Consoli, built between 1332 and 1338.

In winter an ice rink is installed on the Piazza Grande, so the ambitious kids can try loop and flip jumps in front of the Palazzo dei Consoli. The palazzo was built between 1332 and 1338. The locals claim, that this is one of the most beautiful public halls in Italy.
