Massa Martana - Santa Maria della Pace

|
Massa Martana has a lovely medieval center, that is still walled and houses some interesting churches. I arrived too early here, as the fog was still in.
"Santa Maria della Pace" outside the town, is located a little higher than Massa Martana, so there it was less foggy already. The construction of the church started in 1521 next to the old Via Flaminia. After completion the church was handed over to the "Third Order of Saint Francis" (aka "Order of Penance of Saint Francis"), who erected a convent here and added a dome to the church.
A convent has a nice cloister - and still exists here:

The large fresco under the the octagon´s cupola was created by Giovanni Antonio Polinori, between 1647 and 1649.

Massa Martana - Abbazia dei Santi Fidenzio e Teren…

The Abbazia dei Santi Fidenzio e Terenzio, situated in the green countryside, is privatly owned and accepts visitors only for two hours per week. In summer. It was locked and could not see the crypt, that dates to the 9th century.
This was, when the convent was founded and an oratory was erected on the burial place of the two martyrs Fidenzio and Terenzio.
When I climbed over the fence, the morning fog was still around. The abbey church in the background was probably built in the 11th century, but altered later.
