The church, placed on a hill, was constructed in 991. The relics of Saint Vorles are kept here, so this church has been a point of pilgrimage from the beginning. The crypt has been a place of worshipping and pilgrimage for ages.
All the walls near this crypt are covered with graffitis, most dating back to the 19th century. There are literally thousands of names. Some of them are carved in, but most were done with a copying pencil. Here are names and addresses from american soldiers, dating back to a time just after WW1.

There are literally thousands of names. Some of them are carved in, but most were done with a copying pencil, that were very popular from about 1880 on.

The church, placed on a hill, was constructed in 991. The relics of Saint Vorles are kept here, so this church has been a point of pilgrimage from the very beginning. Bernard of Clairvaux went to school here as a boy, to the left is a statue of Saint Bernard, commemorating this.

The tower of Saint Nicholas in the center of Châtillon-sur-Seine. The church was constructed within the 12th century - and got a large gothic choir and transept added in 1536. Originally it was built connected to the "Hopital St. Germain", that cared for the sick and the pilgrims on their way to Vezelay and Santiago.
