La Garde-Adhémar - Prieuré du Val des Nymphes

This was the priory, depending from the Benedictine abbey St. Philibert in Tournus (Burgundy), that cared for St. Michael in the center of La Garde-Adhémar 2kms west (see previous upload).
Already in Gallo Roman times a sanctuary may have existed a around the sources. A christian necropole has been found, older than the priory that, when it was founded in the 10th century, was probably surrounded by a settlement. The people moved up the hill near to the castle - and so the priory declined - and was given up. In the 1980s the vaulting of the 12th c. single nave chapel collapsed, but meanwhile this is repaired and in good conditions.
The valley today is a very popular picnic place.
