Cazères - Notre Dame

Cazères is another old bastide town. Notre Dame, the towns recently restaurated parish church, was erected 13th/14th century on the banks of the River Garonne. Though the "official" Via Tolosana, that I walked some years ago, runs further north (Toulouse-Auch), there were many other ways, the pilgrims could choose. Cazères was one of the places along the Via Garona, where it was easy to cross the river. Cazères had a "hopital" and a "confrérie" to support the pilgrims. Today this is the "SOCIÉTÉ de SAINT JACQUES". The members have niceley decorated the side chapel. There may be even a procession, as here are two banners. ultreia.pagesperso-orange.fr/confcaz.htm

Audressein - Notre-Dame-de-Tramesaygues

Audressein is a tiny village (pop ~120) in the foothills of the Pyrenees. One of the many old pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostella once followed the valley. When "Notre-Dame-de-Tramesaygues" was erected within the 14th century, there were still many pilgrims passing through here. As the confluence of two rivers is near the church "Tramesaygues" may mean "between waters". The porch of the church has three entries. Most of the walls are covered with frescoes. One depicts Saint James / Saint Jaques with the "coquille" on his hat. To his left side is a "campus stellae", what reminds the pilgrim that he is on his way to "San Tiago de Compostella".

Zaragoza - Basilica del Pilar

20 Dec 2014 284
The Basilica del Pilar is the largest Baroque church in Spain. It was erected 1681 - 1754, succeeding much older churches here. Since early times pilgrims come to "Nuestra Señora del Pilar" ("Our Lady of the Pillar"). A legend tells, that in 40 AD Saint Jaques (Saint James) was preaching the gospel on the banks of the Ebro without success. When he was disheartened, Mary appeared atop a pillar, assuring him, that the people would eventually be converted and their faith would be as strong as the pillar she was standing on. Mary gave him the pillar and a wooden image of herself. She then asked Saint Jaques to build a chapel on the spot.

Chapelle Notre-Dame de Tronoën

Next to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Tronoën is the large calvary, one of the landmarks of Brittany. Erected 1450/1470, this is the oldest of the great calvaries in Brittany. The rectangular base measures 4,5m x 3,5m. Under the crucifiction are two friezes, depicting themes from the New Testament. There are lots of scenes and details. Saint Jaques (aka Jacob, Jack, Jake, Jakob, Jakobus, James, Jim) dressed like a pilgrim.
