This museum holds a large collection of the works of art. Here are the originals, many of which are meanwhile replaced with replicas all around he Piazza dei Miracoli, as many of them crumbled and weathered. The museum is well worth a visit, but was closed (for a year?) in autumn 2014. The apse of the Cathedral with the replica of the "Pisa Griffin" (see previous uploads) towering over it - and the Leaning Tower. This panorama, seen from the museum, was once admired as well by Mr. Pierot, who carved his name into the balustrade.

This side shows, that the hare got caught by the lion (see previous upload), maybe the griffin waits for his share of the prey. The nude "dancers" here hold musical instruments.

To the right a lion and a griffin chase a hare. To the left a very common motif: two birds drinking from a chalice. Above them four little nudes dance, holding girdles of flowers (?). The left one blows a kind of instrument, the rights one seems to have a animal head (?).

This reliquary box ("chasse") came from Limoges, where in the 12th century a real industry produced these enamelled caskets. They were exported all over Europe.

On top of the Cathedral´s apse is a replica of this sculpture. This is the original "Pisa Griffin". It is in Pisa since medieval times. It is of Islamic origin. It is 1.07m high - and the largest medieval Islamic metal sculpture known. It was probably casted in Spain (Al-Andaluz) within the 11th century. There is even an Islamic inscription in Kufic letters around the griffin´s breast. The griffin was probably a trophy piece, brought to Pisa during the many wars against the Saracens during the 11th century.

He and his school left works of art, unusual for for the first decades of the 13th century. Here Is Virgin Mary and young Jesus.

A man, holding the cross, flanked by beasts from hell. It is now replaced by a more durable and less fragile copy.
