Dunnadd

Dunadd is a hillfort dating from the Iron Age and early medieval period and is believed to be the capital of the ancient kingdom of Dál Riata, a Gaelic kingdom spanning the northern Irish coast to Argyll and the Scottish islands in the early centuries AD, possibly after the Romans had abandoned Britain. Dunadd is a rocky crag that may have been one time an island. The surrounding land, now largely reclaimed, was formerly boggy. This increased the defensive potential of the site. The ruins of the fort can still be seen at the summit, as can the "Initiation Stone" where the kings were named. The path up is steep, rocky and becomes very slippery when wet. About two metres before I reached the top I slipped - and then slid almost all the way down.
