Boscherville - Abbaye Saint-Georges

The chapter house of the former "Abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville", founded by a chamberlain of William the Conqueror, and in existence upto the French Revolution. The abbey church serves the parish since then. Most buildings of the abbey got demolished after the Revolution, but the chapter house survived. I had been here about 10 years ago, when this part of the abbey was closed. This time I had more luck - and was surprised by originality and quality of the carvings. Some of the carvings here are copies, as the delicate and already weathered originals are kept in a museum in Rouen. This capital, once part of the cloister, is now exhibited in the chapter-house. It is one of the few Romanesque capitals, where a whole orchestra is depicted (another one is in Jaca). Note the large organistrum / hurdy gurdy.

A crowned king on a horse and a person on the ground. An popular icon in medieval times, mostly interpreted as Constantine the Great, trampling down heathenism, or St. James, leading the Reconquista. This one is different, as to the left a queen (?) presents the "Fleur-de-Lys". Actually the couple may be Clovis I and his wife Clotilde. The legend tells, that after the Battle of Tolbiac (496), an angel gave the lilies to Clotilde. As Clovis got baptised after the battle there may be a connection to the previous capital.

While on the right a person (on his knees in front of a baptism font) gets crowned, a lion (?) attacks a soldier in chainmail on the left.

Flanking the entrance to the chapter house three large statues, holding banners. There were a bishop/abbot demanding "disciplina", the Death bringing to the monks mind, how sudden life could end. Here is a crowned lady, standing for the paradise. Her banner reads "VITA BEATA VOCOR" "I am called for the happy life". I think "vita beata" here means "eternal life".

His banner reads "EGO MORS HOMINEM JUGULO CORRIPIO" -"I am the Death - I cut the man´s throat". A "memento mori" for the monks.

On the left the "Binding of Isaac". Genesis 22:9-13 "They arrived at the place God had described to him. Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. Then Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. But the Lord’s messenger called out to Abraham from heaven, "Abraham? Abraham?" Abraham said, "I’m here." The messenger said, "Don’t stretch out your hand against the young man, and don´t do anything to him. I now know that you revere God and didn`t hold back your son, your only son, from me." Abraham looked up and saw a single ram caught by its horns in the dense underbrush. Abraham went over, took the ram, and offered it as an entirely burned offering instead of his son." I am not sure about the right capital. For a while I saw this as the "Emmaus Road", but it may as well be Christ pointing out the way to pilgrims..

What is the parish church of Boscherville today was, upto the French Revolution the church of the "Abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville", founded by a chamberlain of William the Conquerer. The church was erected within the 13th century. It is together with the chapter house the last remaining structure of the abbey. These fighting knights seem to sit on ponies, but I learned, that horses were much smaller in medieval times.
