The southern side is totally different. Within the 14th/15th century, the right aisle of the romanesque basilica was cut off - and a gothic hall-church was erected instead. So probably quadrupling the capacity.

Verne claims to be the oldest place of pilgrimage in Westphalia, dating back to the cruisades. Actually it is not that busy any more... St. Bartholomew church on a little hill is a three dimensional puzzle. The oldest part (11th.) is romanesque - and most of it is still in place, including the steeple. Then there are addons. The church got longer in gothic style - and a round neogothic chapel was added in 1901.
