Huesca - Catedral de Santa Maria

The "Catedral de Santa Maria" in Huesca got erected over 300 years. The building started end of the 13th century in gothic style, replacing a mosque that had served as a church, since Huesca was conquered in 1096 by Christian troops led by Peter I of Aragon.
The portal of the Catedral de Santa Maria is a perfect example of the prestigious gothic architecture. With the pointed archivolts, it seems "undisturbed" and complete. Unlike the many portals in France, where the Wars of Religion left visible scars.

The diocesan museum, that is hosted inside the cathedral, displays an extraordenary collection of medieval art. Many of the treasures are under this gothic cupola, equipped with a smoke detector.

As the Magi, following the Star of Bethlehem, were "role models" for many pilgrims following the camino on the way to Santiago de CompoSTELA, the Magi can often be found along the old "routes".
Here are the Magi adorating Virgin and Child. One of the Magi kisses the child´s feet (just like seen in near Agüero). Please note that the left Magi is - black! Very common later, but absolutely uncommon for the time!
I leaned, that the altarpiece, seen here in a detail, was donated by King Pedro IV to the cathedral in 1367. It was given in compensation for the seizure of silver lamps during the war again Peter I of Castile. 1367 this work was "state of the art".

Here are the Magi adorating Virgin and Child. The work has a stunning quality. There are three horses on the left, one is probably a grey horse. The Star of Bethlehem has stopped next to the arch.

Here are the Magi on their way to Bethlehem, a detail of the reliquary just seen on the previous upload. They seem to pass through a thicket of intertwining vines, but do have the time to wave at the onlookers.

The heads of the three horses on the very left are very typical. I will upload a second photo of this reliquary next.

The thunderstorm, that had met me upstairs, when I was up on the belltower, continued and it got pretty dark inside the cathedral. Here is the central nave. Only the apse with the huge, white alabaster altarpiece, created by important Spanish sculptor Damia Forment around 1520, is well illuminated.

This Romanesque portal, leading to the cloister, is one of the few traces of the "pre-Gothic" structure. The polylobe portal is strongly influenced by the moorish/Mozarabic style.

It took me probably ten minutes to descend from the tower of the cathedral. When I had reached the ground and looked up, the weather had worsened. Time to stay inside and visit the cathedral´s museum, where I learned that the construction of the now gothic cathedral started end of the 13th century. It took 300 years to complete it. Actually a mosque had been here and served as a church for nearly two hundred years, since Huesca was conquered in 1096 by Christian troops led by Peter I of Aragon.

Late afternoon in Huesca. Standing on the bell tower of the Huesca Cathedral. Below is the bullring. The tower was erected between 1369 and 1423, it lost it´s spire during the Spanish Civil War, but still is pretty high. A thunderstorm had approached Huesca much faster, than I had expected, when I still was on the ground. So I was not prepared and got pretty wet up there - and it was difficult for me to handle the camera.
