Havelberg - St. Laurentius

27 May 2023 3 65
With a victory in the Battle of Lenzen in 929, the Saxens made a significant advance into the dominion of the Slavic tribes. Shortly thereafter, the area around Havelberg was conquered and a castle complex was built on the ridge. Otto I continued the conquest of eastern Elbe areas and founded the bishopric of Havelberg as a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. The settlement of a bishopric in Havelberg suggests that the place represented a regional center as early as the 10th century and possibly before. As early as 983, a rebellion broke out among Slavic groups, during which the bishopric of Havelberg was conquered. It was not until 1130 that King Lothar III succeeded. to recapture the place. The city was built in the middle of the 12th century, spatially separate from the cathedral district, on a promontory in a bend in the Havel River, that was made to an island for strategic reasons. After the re-establishment of the bishopric, the village on the island developed again. The town church St. Laurentius was built in the first half of the 15th century on the foundations of a previous building. The first written mention of the existing town church dates back to 1340. The Reformation came to Havelberg in 1541. The church survived the Thirty Years' War and a town fire in 1627 but suffered serious damage. During the restoration that took place in 1660, the tower was completed to its present day.

Satrup - St. Laurentius

07 Jul 2021 95
The large peninsula of Angeln was "administered" by the bishops in Lund (Sweden) around 1200, when the church in Satrup was built. They made sure then that still today almost every parish in Angeln has a (sometimes small) Romanesque church. The single nave Laurentius church in Satrup is quite large. The oldest piece of equipment inside is the granite baptismal font from the 13th century. On the shaft there are four heads, a king, a bishop, a devil and a wolf.

The interior is dominated by the large late Gothic triumphal cross, created around 1500. Often two persons flank the cross. The persons are usually Mary, the mother of Jesus, and one of his disciples, usually, following the Gospels, the apostle John. John's face.

The base and the corners are made of granite blocks. The walls were built with fieldstones. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the church had a wooden bell stack (Glockenstapel). In 1903, it got replaced by the brick and granite tower of today.

Kalkhorst- St. Laurentius

The parish of Kalkhorst is mentioned in 1230 in a list of villages belonging to the Ratzeburg diocese At the same time the village church of Kalkhorst was built. It was erected by the lords of the village. The church of today stands out because of the irregularity of its ground plan and the many additions and alterations. The square tower stands asymmetrically in front. The choir is dated to around 1350 based on an epitaph and replaced a previous building. The nave is attributed to the 13th century, so it is the older part of the building. The baroque furnishings from the beginning of the 18th century. The late gothic fresco of the choir. The mouth of hell.

The rich, noble estate owners had their own richly decorated galleries, while their workers and servants had to sit below them.

Schönberg - St. Laurentius

Schönberg was first mentioned in a document in 1219 as Sconenberge. It was the residence of the bishops of Ratzeburg at the beginning of the 14th century. There was already a church here in 1235. This was extended after 1324. The massive west tower was added in the early 16th century. In 1601, the church burned down due to a major fire and subsequently received a new decoration. In 1831 the tower received its present shape. A restoration of the church took place from 1987 to 1991, during which parts of the painting of the early 17th century could be uncovered. Since the church was closed, I could not see these frescoes, nor the still existing bronze baptismal font, which was cast in 1357 by Gerhard Kranemann.

Leutesdorf - St. Laurentius

08 Jun 2018 142
Wine is produced in and around Leutersdorf since many centuries. Venantius Fortunatus (530 – 610), one of the last Latin poets mentions the vinyards in his poem "De navigio suo", describing Merovingian King Childebert´s travel from Metz to Andernach. St. Laurentius, located in the center of the small town, was erected 1727 - 1730. The predeceeding church was Romanesque, the tower of this church "survived".
