Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".
Cologne´s former harbour was developed during the 1880s, and spaned from the Südbrücke (Southern Railway Bridge), seen in the backdrop, and the Severinsbrücke (Severin Bridge), about 2kms along the Rhine.
The redevelopment project and reconstruction started in 2002 and was completed 2011. While the formerly commercial port is now being used as a marina, most buildings (some are former wharehouses) house numerous prestigious companies, posh flats and expensive restaurants.
The "Wurstbraterei" is a reasonable priced takeaway - probably the most famous in the whole of Germany, as it plays an important role in German TV.
"Tatort" (Crime scene) is a police TV-series that has been running continuously since 1970. It is the longest-running German TV drama. The different episodes (about 30 per year) are produced in different German cities, starring its own police inspectors. Since the late 1990s the episodes produced in Cologne have a kind of running gag, as the last minutes the audience watch the two inspectors having a "curry wurst" in front of the "Wurstbraterei". For the day of shooting the "Wurstbraterei" (* 1955) is moved to the right bank of the Rhine, so the Cologne Cathedral is seen in the backdrop.
