Noizé - Saint-Martin-les-Baillargeaux

07 Nov 2013 141
St. Martin is surrounded by fields, about 500 meters west of Noizé, a small hamlet, belonging to Oiron. This is "une église sans village", a sanctuary, surrounded by an old graveyard and existing since the 10th century. Legends tell, that it was erected on the place of a pagan temple and it may have offered medieval pilgrims a safe place for the night. The small church was used for funeral services, but that seems to be long ago. Most of the walls are covered with carved graffiti, but it is very hard, to read the names.
