Saint-Vivien was erected within the 12th century and got fortified like a castle during the 100 Years´ War. At that time the walls of the nave got enlarged - and towers were added.

Last time I visited Écoyeux was during pouring rain in 2012. Now I could see Saint-Vivien in brilliant sunshine. The church was erected within the 12th century and got fortified like a castle during the 100 Years´ War. At that time the walls of the nave got enlarged - and towers were added.
As Saint-Vivien is a church with good acoustics, artists meet here, perform and record classic music. In the crossing the microphones are already installed. The interior of the church is pretty sober. To the left very narrow stairs lead down to a small crypt, used as an ossuary.

Like in St. Sauvant, 10kms south, Saint-Vivien was erected within the 12th century and got strongly fortified the 100 Years War. At that time the walls of the nave got enlarged - and towers and battlements were added tp the Romanesque church. I was very surprised to find a narrow entrance to a small crypt.
I squeezed through - and found that the crypt was used as an ossuary.

Rain did not stop in Écoyeux. Like in St. Sauvant, 10kms south (previous upload), Saint-Vivien was erected within the 12th century and got fortified like a castle during the 100 Years War. At that time the walls of the nave got enlarged - and the towers, seen here, were added. All along the battlements runs a walk for the defenders. As the three archivolts of the portal and the capitals are still in a very good condition, the church was obviously never sieged.
