Zborówek - Kościół św. Idziego

18 Apr 2022 1 57
The late Gothic church made of larch wood is one of the oldest wooden churches in Poland. The rood screen bears the date 1459. After a reconstruction in 1654 it was consecrated. Reconstructions took place in the first half of the 19th century. The church has a block structure, standing on a stone foundation and is reinforced on both sides. When the wooden church became too small for the parish, in 1906-1908 the western wall was demolished and a neo-Romanesque brick nave, seen here, was added. The wooden bell tower was also built around this time.

Liepāja - Svētā Jāzepa Katedrālē

The settlement was first mentioned as "Lyva" in 1253. It was a small unfortified harbour town in the state of the Livonian Order. In the 14th century it was burnt down several times by the Lithuanians. As a result of the Reformation, two Lutheran parishes emerged in Libau. One congregation was formed by the Protestants of Latvian language, the other one for German speaking Protestants. The granting of the town charter took place in 1625. Soon after the construction of the harbour began. In 1698, a major fire destroyed most of the town's wooden buildings. The Great Plague of 1708 to 1714 claimed the lives of a third of the citizens. The Svētā Jāzepa Katedrālē (St. Joseph Cathedral) is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Liepāja. The neo-Romanesque church was built between 1894 and 1900.

Cologne - St. Nikolaus

Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior". Cologne´s population growth end of the 19th century was immense, near villages got incorporated into the city. In 1852 Cologne had about 100.000 citizens, in 1900 there were about 370.000. So not only homes, but as well churches were built. The neo-Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was erected 1903 - 1909 on a site, where a small Nicholas chapel had existed upto the 15th century. The massive church is sometimes dubbed "Sülzer Dom".

Saint-Gervais - Saint-Gervais

Saint-Gervais was erected within the 12th century, but underwent many modifications over the centuries. It got renovated and enlarged during the 19th century - and it may well be that the portal, seen here, was created then. It is so clean and "mint" and "modern", that I doubt an age of 800 years.
