Bougneau - Saint-Pierre

The church of Bougneau is surrounded by a graveyard. It dates from the 11th century, but was fundamentally rebuilt in the 15th century, so that little of the old structure has survived. The originally single-nave church was extended by a side aisle. The two-storey apse design seems to belong to the 12th century. The church was locked. There are many graffiti carved into the outer walls of the church. Most pf them were carved in by medieval pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostella. Here somebody carved in a "Coquille Saint-Jacques".

While in nearby Pons the medieval pilgrims carved many large ships into the medieval hospitals here are boat-like structures.
