Segovia - San Lorenzo

22 Oct 2023 4 90
A Celtic castle existed here, from which resistance against the Romans originated. The city was nevertheless taken. Afterward, it began to be built as a Roman city and became an important Roman military base. In the second half of the 5th century, Segovia became part of the Visigoth Empire. From the 8th to the 11th centuries, Segovia was under Moorish possession. In 1085 Alfonso VI conquered the city. From the 13th to the 15th century it was a royal residence. San Lorenzo has undergone various alterations throughout its history. The erection of the one nave church in the Romanesque-Mudejar style started in the 12th century and like most Romanesque churches in Segovia, San Lorenzo has an interesting portico. The capitals are a little weathered. Not surprisingly, the medieval artists focused here on the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence.

Sahagún - San Lorenzo

09 Sep 2023 2 51
Legend tells, that in the 3rd century, the Facundus and Primitivus were martyred here. In 872 a monastery was founded in honor of the two martyrs, but it was destroyed again in 873. After the reconstruction, there was further destruction by Almansor at the end of the 10th century. The Way of St. James runs here and when in 1085, a market town was founded, which, was endowed with royal privileges, it was very attractive to pilgrims to settle here. In 1085 the bridge over the Rio Cea was also built, which is still in use. Thanks to donations from Alfonso VI. and his successors, Sahagún became the most powerful abbey on the Camino Francés, minting its own coins. The decline began at the latest when the Catholic Monarchs decided to support the monastery of San Benito in Valladolid. Sahagún became dependent on this monastery and lost importance and privileges. An earlier church of the same name was mentioned in Sahagún as early as 1110. The existing church was built in the first half of the 13th century. Nothing is known about the commissioner. It could have been a priory church. The nave was completed in the Gothic style a little later than the choir area.

Signa is a town about 15 kilometers west of Florence. Charlemagne gifted one of his captains a "Castle of Signa", although this is disputed. The church of San Lorenzo is mentioned in 866. There are some tombs from the Lombard period, but the church was locked.

Florence - San Lorenzo

Florentina was established in Roman times as a settlement for veteran soldiers. The name had changed already when young Charlemagne conquered the town in 774. It became part of the Duchy of Tuscany, with Lucca as the capital. Around 1000 Margrave Hugo chose Florence as residency instead of Lucca. After the death of Matilda of Tuscany (1115), the Florentines formed a republic ruled by a council. The town prospered, despite a constant fight between the different factions and noble families. In the 15th century, Florence was among the largest and wealthiest cities in Europe. This was when the Medici family entered the political scene. As a dynasty of art-loving, power-hungry bankers, they made Florence the birthplace of the Renaissance. The Basilica di San Lorenzo is at the center of the market district of the city. It may be the oldest church in Florence, having been consecrated in 393 AD. For three centuries it was the city's cathedral. San Lorenzo was the parish church of the Medici family. In 1419, Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici offered to finance a new church to replace an eleventh-century Romanesque rebuilding. Filippo Brunelleschi was commissioned to design it. The lack of funds slowed the construction and forced changes to the original design. By the early 1440s, only its sacristy had been worked on because that was being paid for by the Medici. In 1442, the Medici stepped in to take over the financial responsibility of the church as well. After Brunelleschi died in 1446, the work continued. By the time the building was completed, aspects of its layout and detailing no longer corresponded to the original plan. The Medici Pope Leo X gave Michelangelo the commission to design an outer façade of the basilica in white Carrara marble in 1518. Michelangelo made a large wooden model but the outer facade of the basilica remained unbuilt.

Huesca - Fiesta

26 Feb 2014 137
Saint Lawrence (aka "Lawrence of Rome"), who was martyred in Rome in a gridiron, was one of the most popular saints within medieval times. He was born around 225 in Osca, a place that later changed the name to Huesca. Saint Lawrence is celebrated on 10 August, when his relics are on display in Rome, while in Huesca - the "Fiesta San Lorenzo" begins. We missed it for a couple of days. The colours during the fiesta are green and white. Only very few green and white fiesta scarves were left in the dusty shop window. Here the fiesta´s (green and white) website www.fiestassanlorenzo.es/#1
