Oviedo - Mantequería Loli Arrieta

01 Oct 2024 36
Oviedo was founded on a hill that the Romans called Ovetao. The monks Máximo and Fromestano founded a monastery on the Roman road in 761 and built a hermitage. Later, two dozen monks from the Muslim south joined the founders and, according to a document, chose Fromestano as their first abbot. They were under the protection of Fruela I, who chose the place as a residence for his wife Munia, who gave birth here to their son and later King Alfonso II. Alfonso II (aka "the Chaste", "el Casto" moved the capital here in 812 and made Oviedo the seat of the bishopric. In 912, however, Oviedo lost its function as capital to León under García I in the course of the reconquest. Alfonso II fortified Oviedo and furnished it with palaces and churches. During his reign, a tomb attributed to St James the Elder was discovered in Santiago de Compostela in 812. The king travelled from Oviedo to Santiago and is said to have been the first pilgrim to Santiago. He is also said to have opened the first Way of St James, the Camino Primitivo. Until the city of León was established as both the capital of the Kingdom of León and the nexus of a safe route — the Camino Francés — the Camino Primitivo remained the most frequented route for those going to Santiago. I learned, that Mantequería Loli Arrieta is one of the very best bakeries in Oviedo.

Porto - Confeitaria do Bolhão

Porto is with a population of about 250.000 the largest city in Northern Portugal. In "Greater Porto", the metropolitan area, live even more than 1.7 million people. The historical center of Porto was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Port wine is named after Porto, since the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia on the southern banks of the river Douro are the centers for packaging, transport and export of the fortified wine. Some years ago I had been here for a couple of days before I started the "Camino Portugues" here. The "Confeitaria do Bolhão" is a bakery and pastry shop, that was founded in 1896 and existed upto 1985. After the doors were locked for 10 years it was reopened and by now, here is as well a snack-bar and a restaurant. I had a nice breakfast here. www.confeitariadobolhao.com/ingles/empresa.html Have a look inside: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiYqFuj0_Fw

The "Pastelaria Tupi", an agreeable bakery and take away, is named after the Tupi people. The Tupi people were indigenous to Brazil, inhabitating almost all of Brazil's coast when the Portuguese first arrived there. The population may have numbered up to one million around 1500, but it argely disappeared because of European diseases or because of slavery.

Ghent - Groentenmarkt

Left of the coffee-shop is the "Bakkerij Himschoot", the oldest bakery in Ghent, founded 1880, though the legend tells, that bread was produced in this house, named the "De Croone" since the 17th century. www.bakkerijhimschoot.be/ Right of the coffee-shop is the mustard factory "Tierenteyn-Verlent". The Tierenteyn-family produces mustard in Ghent since 1790, but meanwhile offers as well pickles, chutneys and mayonnaise. www.tierenteyn-verlent.be/ Both companies are very recommendable!

Rosheim - Boulangerie Witz-Rohmer

Congratulation! The boulangerie Witz-Rohmer, just opposite the "Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul" has celebrated it´s 400th birthday! That was lareyd some years ago, but the post is still out. 15 generations of gifted bakers have lived and worked here. Now, we learned, it is the oldest bakery in France! Here is the (french) website of the bakery, telling the whole long story. www.rohmer-rosheim.fr/histoire.html Please note - on the left in front of the building the legendary Renault R4. Between 1961 and 1992 about 8 millions of these cars were produced. When I bought my very first car, the R4 was an option. But in the end I choose his older cousin, a (light blue) Citroen 2CV. Just in case, you do not remember the 2CV: www.ipernity.com/doc/323415/41596484//in/album/885004
