Husby - St. Vincentius

12 Jul 2021 128
Husby was probably an important place in northern Angeln in the Viking Age. It was located at the crossroads of two important trade routes. In 1730, a hoard of coins was found in Husby. The coins of which had been minted in Haithabu between 940 and 980. For centuries Husby was the center of the "Husbyharde". "Harden" were Danish administrative districts. The church was built in the early 12th century. There was probably a wooden predecessor, as it is assumed that quite soon after the Christianization of the country a church was built in each Harde. The present building is Romanesque and made of hewn granite blocks. The tower dates from the Gothic period. Unfortunately the church was locked.

Satrup - St. Laurentius

07 Jul 2021 97
The large peninsula of Angeln was "administered" by the bishops in Lund (Sweden) around 1200, when the church in Satrup was built. They made sure then that still today almost every parish in Angeln has a (sometimes small) Romanesque church. The single nave Laurentius church in Satrup is quite large. The oldest piece of equipment inside is the granite baptismal font from the 13th century. On the shaft there are four heads, a king, a bishop, a devil and a wolf.

The interior is dominated by the large late Gothic triumphal cross, created around 1500. Often two persons flank the cross. The persons are usually Mary, the mother of Jesus, and one of his disciples, usually, following the Gospels, the apostle John. John's face.

In 1903, it got replaced by the brick and granite tower of today.

Satrup - Königlich Privilegierte Apotheke

There are two pharmacies in Satrup, but the "Königlich Privilegierte Apotheke" is the olderone. It is actually the oldest pharmacy in rural Angeln. King Frederick VI of Denmark granted the pharmacist Jacob Friedrich Vasmer the privilege of establishing a pharmacy in Satrup on March 22, 1836. The privilege to operate a pharmacy was only endorsed by the government and granted by the king if the appropriate conditions were met, i.e. the necessary supply of the population with medicines was not guaranteed elsewhere and the expected economic return ensured a future existence in the long term. The pharmacy is still in existence!

Struxdorf- St. Georg

06 Jul 2021 1 100
Struxdorf was probably more important in the Middle Ages than it is today, because a church dedicated to St. Georg stood here very early. The Romanesque fieldstone church, surrounded by teh cemetery, was built around 1230 as the first church in the area. The southern porch was added in 1882.

Note the tower´s roof in the backdrop.

Uelsby - St. Jakobus

The small church of St. Jakobskirche in Uelsby is surrounded by the cemetery. The church dates from the 13th century. A legend tells that a pious, noble lady, initiated the construction. She had gone to church in nearby Struxdorf, but then her lap dog there was killed by a street dog. From that moment on she wanted her "own" Church.

Fahrenstedt - Kirche

05 Jul 2021 133
The small village Fahrenstedt belongs to the larger Böklund (known by the "Böklunder Würstchen" - a brand for sausages).. The medieval fieldstone church, built in the 13th century, at the crossing of a small river, was probably located on the way from Schleswig to St. Georgs Church in Struxdorf, the oldest church in the area. Only after the church was built did a village form around it. The centuries-old guardian watched us. Unfortunately, the church was locked.

Loit - Kirche

Loit is located a few kilometers from Süderbrarup (there the church was closed) in an area that was heavily fought over during the migration period in the 4th century. Already at the end of the 19th century, excavations began in the Thorsberg moor ("Thorsberg moor"), during which weapons were also found. There may have been a sacrificial site of the Germanic war god Thor. About 2000 urns from the period up to 400 AD were excavated nearby. Scholars suppose that the warlike conflicts were significant in the context of the emigration of most of the Angles to Britain. The small Romanesque church in Loit was built in the 12th century from fieldstones. The wooden tower ("bell stack") is from 1762. The original apse was demolished in 1834, when it became dilapidated.
