The church building dates from around 1145. It was on the ancient pilgrim route from Whitby to Durham Cathedral. It has a Norman chancel and horseshoe arch and a Leper's window. A record from the 19th century describes the church as “a ruinous, neglected-looking edifice………" Older people will certainly remember where they were, when the heard the news.
