Tharros

The ancient town of Tharros was a nuragic settlement already around 1200 BC. About 400 years later Phoenicians lived here, followed by the Punics and the Romans. The first reports of the excavations in the 19th century unleashed a sort of "gold rush" that led hundreds of men to carry out severe looting. These were not only locals, French author Honoré de Balzac was one of them. Today the area is an open-air museum with active archaeological excavation sites. It is a main tourist attraction - even in early June. www.tharros.sardegna.it/en/archaeological-site
