Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".

In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".
The "Kölner Dom" (Cologne Cathedral) was planned as a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Magi. The relics of the "Three Holy Kings" had been stolen from Milano by Archbishop Rainald von Dassel when his friend and confidante of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa looted and destroyed Milano in 1164.
The construction of the cathedral began in 1248 but was halted in the years around 1560 unfinished. Work did not restart until the 1840s, and the cathedral was completed to its original medieval plan in 1880.
After the original plans for the façade had been found in Darmstadt and Paris 1814/1816 it was decided to complete the cathedral. Two thirds of the costs were raised by civic efforts, while the remaining costs were covered by the Prussian state. The state saw this as a way to improve its relations with the large number of Catholic subjects it had gained in 1815, when the Catholic Rhineland was added to the Protestant Prussian Kingdom.
In 1842 Frederick William IV of Prussia and Johannes von Geissel, later archbishop of Cologne, laid the foundation stone for the completion. In 1880, 632 years after construction had begun, the Cologne Cathedral was completed. The celebration was attended by Emperor Wilhelm I. It was regarded as a project to symbolize German nationhood.
With a height of about 157 m., the cathedral was the highest building on the planet for a short while. The Washington Monument, completed in 1884, took over that position with 169m.

Cologne´s "Rheinauhafen", the former harbour was developed during the 1880s on the bank of the Rhine. It spanned about 2kms along the river
The "Harry Blum Platz" was created as part of the "Rheinauhafen" redevelopment project, which started in 2002. It was completed in 2011. While the formerly commercial port is now being used as a marina, most buildings house numerous prestigious companies, posh flats and expensive restaurants

Harry-Blum, after whom this square is named, became the first directly elected mayor of Cologne in 1999. He only held that office for six months when he died suddenly in March 2000.

The "Poller Wiesen" (Wiese = meadow) are a great place for getting tanned in summer - and of course watching the fantastic panorama. Seen in front of "Groß St. Martin" ("Great St. Martin") and the cathedral ("Kölner Dom") is the green Severinsbrücke.

The "Wurstbraterei" is a reasonable priced takeaway - probably the most famous in the whole of Germany, as it plays an important role in German TV.
"Tatort" (Crime scene) is a police TV-series that has been running continuously since 1970. It is the longest-running German TV drama. The different episodes (about 30 per year) are produced in different German cities, starring its own police inspectors. Since the late 1990s the episodes produced in Cologne have a kind of running gag, as the last minutes the audience watch the two inspectors having a "curry wurst" in front of the "Wurstbraterei". For the day of shooting the "Wurstbraterei" (* 1955) is moved to the right bank of the Rhine, so the Cologne Cathedral is seen in the backdrop.

The Elisabeth-Treskow-Platz is in the center of the new and posh Rheinauhafen, surrounded by cafes and restaurants.
The building seen here is named "Rheinbastion". It was built 1882-1891 directly on the embankment of the Rhine to defend the harbour and city of Cologne. From 1939 the water police had offices here. After WWII the bastion got two additional levels and a new roof. The main entrance is on the first floor, what means it can be used during floodings.
Meanwhile a Creperie is in the groundfloor.
