Berwick-upon-Tweed - Berwick Bridge

Berwick-upon-Tweed is the northernmost town in England. Although the town is on the northern (Scottish) side of the river, it is part of England as the border runs around Berwick, making it the only part of England north of the Tweed. Due to its location, Berwick held a key strategic position in the wars between England and Scotland for more than 300 years from the mid-11th century, and was the scene of a number of key events in the Anglo-Scottish Border Wars.
In 1174, Berwick passed to England as a pledge for the subjugation of William I of Scotland, who had been captured by Henry II of England in an attempt to conquer Northumberland. In 1190, William I bought back his independence from Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) for 10,000 marks, which Richard needed to finance his crusade, and Berwick became Scottish again. In 1216, the town was destroyed by the English King John (Lackland). In 1296 Berwick was stormed and plundered by Edward I of England. Almost all the inhabitants remaining in the town were slain.
The Berwick Bridge (aka Old Bridge) was built between 1611 and 1624.
There were four previous bridges on the same site, two of which were destroyed by floods (the original bridge in 1199 and the third bridge in 1294), one by an English attack in 1216, while the last bridge, built in 1376, stood until King James I of England ordered the construction of the current bridge.
The bridge is 355m long and 5m wide - and is being restored.

The current building was commissioned to replace an earlier building.
The construction of the new town hall began in 1754 and was opened as Berwick Town Hall in 1760. A 46 m belfry and clock tower with a weather vane towered above the portico.
After WWII the proposed demolition of the town hall was considered by the borough council, but in the end it was extensively refurbished instead.
Vézelay - Sainte-Marie-Madeleine

The Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vezelay is a breathtaking jewel of romanesque architecture. This is probably the church I have visited most often all over France.
As a young student at the university back in the early 70s I had done some research about the "Cluny Network". Vezelay played a role in that and I had been here a first time.
The relics of Sainte Marie-Magdalene had been venerated here and this was a major centre of pilgrimage up to the day when in 1279 Dominican monks in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume claimed to have found the "real" sarcophagus of Marie Madeleine.
When the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela had developed into a pan-European phenomenon, Vezelay was a gathering point, as here the "Via Lemovicensis" started.
Bernard of Clairvaux had preached the Second Crusade to a large crowd at Vezelay in 1146. In 1189, the Frankish and English factions of the Third Crusade met here before departing for the Holy Land. The English army was led by Richard I of England (aka "Richard the Lionheart", "Cœur de Lion"), the Frankish by Philip II of France (aka "Phillipe Auguste")
One of the many things, I could not understand as a young student was, how people covered these enormous distances. Many years later, after I had visited Vezelay a couple of times by car, I decided in 2005 to walk to Vezelay. I started (absolutely inexperienced!), in Trier (Treves) - and gave up in Vaucouleurs after about a week. I restarted with some more experience (and less luggage) some weeks later in Vaucouleurs and finally reached Vezelay August 2nd. 2005.
There I found the office of the "Association des 'Amis et Pèlerins de Saint-Jacques de la Voie de Vézelay", and there another a long story started, that kept me walking...
In 2019 the facade and the narthex were under renovation. I have uploaded already many photos taken in and around Vezelay, so I will add only two this time.

A hermitage was founded here by Géraud de Salles, a friend of Robert de Arbrissel, the of the Cistercian abbey of Fontevrault. In 1119 the hermitage was made an abbey, connected to the Abbaye de Pontigny. The Abbaye de Cîteaux ceded twelve monks to Cadouin for the first settlement of the monastery.
Around 1200 the monastery came into possession of the "Saint-Suaire de Cadouin". This was believed to be the facecloth from the tomb of Christ, said to have been brought from Antioch by a priest after the first crusade. This relic made the abbey an important place of pilgrimage on the way to Santiago and brought it great prestige and wealth. Even Louis IX of France ("St. Louis"), Richard I of England ("Richard the Lionheart") and Emperor Charles V ("Charles Quint") visited Cadouin to see the relic.
The war of the 14th century let the pilgrimage come to an end and let the abbey decline. In 1357 the abbey was ruined and only two monks stayed to guard the shroud, that was transferred to Toulouse in 1392. This transport of shroud to Toulouse deprived the abbey of donations.
The shroud returned and with the strong support of the French Kings, the abbey recovered after 1455. Thanks to royal protection, the cloister was rebuilt in an extravagant way.
The abbey was affiliated to the Cistercian order, but not founded by it. This is one reason, that may explain the enormous creativity here, as "normally" the Cistercian art is very sober.

This imaginative work reminded me of Arthur Miller´s "Death of a Salesman", but here the story is a little different - and much older!
The salesman has already died. He was still able to place is merchandise below him, his bag hanging from the tree. His soul has left the body and was carried up to heaven by two angels, where it can now be seen, sitting in Abraham´s bosom. Two angels are placed next to Abraham´s head, to back the transfer with music.
