The church building dates from around 1145. It was on the ancient pilgrim route from Whitby to Durham Cathedral. It has a Norman chancel and horseshoe arch and a Leper's window. A record from the 19th century describes the church as “a ruinous, neglected-looking edifice………" Older people will certainly remember where they were, when the heard the news. Tony Blair was obviously in Trimdon.

A record from the 19th century describes the church as “a ruinous, neglected-looking edifice………" In 1884 the North Aisle, the Vestry and a new stone font were added. 20th century improvements included choir pews removed to allow flexibility of use of the Chancel area and a new organ installed The gravestones from the churchyard being removed and repositioned next to a path leading to the church.
