Chassenard - Saint-Georges

15 May 2017 245
The nave and the portal are all of the once Romanesque church that survived the times. The original church was erected within the 12th century, so the carvings seen here more than 800 years old. A detail of the left capital. The three Magi have reached Bethlehem, where Mary wears a crown - and the Star of Bethlehem shines over the crib.

Narni - Concattedrale di San Giovenale

The Narni Cathedral (aka "Concattedrale di San Giovenale", "Duomo di Narni") was built from 1047 on and consecrated in 1145 by Pope Eugenius III. A smaller church had existed here since the 6th century. It had been erected over the tomb of San Giovenale, an early missionary in southern Umbria, the first bishop here and today the town´s patron saint. Behind the large crib is the Cathedral´s older, Romanesque portal.

Visciano - Santa Pudenziana

Visciano is a rural settlement about 8kms south of Narni, so small, that this church often is named "Santa Pudenziana of Narni". Maybe the hamlet, located near an ancient Roman road, had some (meanwhile forgotten) importance thousand years ago. Not much is known about this church. Most scholars date the building to the 10th or 11th century. It was built, using recycled materials coming from other roman and paleochristian edifices in area. Down in the crypt, under the elevated apse. It is very rough and probably the oldest part of the church. For Christmas the crypt was equipped with a crib - under a half dome of flickering blue leds.

Roma - St. Peter's Basilica

Early sunset in winter - St. Peter's Basilica in late daylight. St. Peter's Basilica is of course part of Vatican City (officially the "State of Vatican City") a walled enclave within the city of Rome. But with an area of about 44 hectares, and a population of about 850 it is the smallest state in the world and so I merge it into Rome and Italy. St. Peter's Basilica of today replaced "Old St. Peter's Basilica", that existed from the 4th to the 16th century, when the construction on the new basilica started. Charlemagne was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in "Old St. Peter" in 800. (New) St. Peter's Basilica, designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture, completed in 1590. It is one of the largest churches worldwide . Seen in the center of the "St. Peter's Square" is the Vatican Obelisk, that was originally taken by Caligula from Heliopolis in Egypt. Next to the obelisk is a christmas tree and a large crib.

Logroño - San Bartolomé

San Bartolomé is the oldest church of Logroño. The construction dates back to the 12th century. Though it got altered largely in the 16th century, the Romanesque structure is still visible. During the time of "La Desamortización", when mid 19th century many monastic properties got sold, the church was used as a warehouse and workshop. It was even discussed to demolish the building. The porch was created in the 13th century. Below the large vignettes themed about Saint Bartholomew's life and death (see previous upload) are small, very nice scenes. Here is a shepherd dog herding sheep. Below the shepherd, who is listening to an angel. To the very right is the crib, with ass and ox.
