Daglingworth - Church of the Holy Rood

The Church of the Holy Rood was built in the 11th century and extended, including the tower, in the 15th. A Victorian restoration, between 1845 and 1850, included the addition of the north aisle and rebuilding the chancel.
The limestone building consists of a nave with south porch, chancel, north aisle and west tower.
A series of Saxon carvings, including one of the crucifixion, were rediscovered during rebuilding work in 1850. They predate the Norman conquest. They are dated to around 1050. The carvings were originally built into the chancel arch and are now in the nave.
St Peter - The resurrection
Kalkhorst- St. Laurentius

The parish of Kalkhorst is mentioned in 1230 in a list of villages belonging to the Ratzeburg diocese At the same time the village church of Kalkhorst was built. It was erected by the lords of the village.
The church of today stands out because of the irregularity of its ground plan and the many additions and alterations. The square tower stands asymmetrically in front.
The choir is dated to around 1350 based on an epitaph and replaced a previous building. The nave is attributed to the 13th century, so it is the older part of the building. The baroque furnishings from the beginning of the 18th century.

Bad Goegging - St. Andreas

The former parish church St. Andreas in Bad Goegging has a very winding and interesting history. This is the second church here. The predecessing one was built once over the basin of a Roman thermal bath, used by the Roman troops for recreation.
There is a speculation, that Christians lived here already during the late Roman times. It is proven that this place was a Christian center during the time of the early missionaries. Only about 12kms north is Weltenburg Abbey, the oldest Bavarian monastery founded by iro-scottish monks in 617 - and there may have been connections to Goegging.
The northern portal of St. Andreas is so elaborate, that this church must have been important during the 12th century. The entrance is flanked by two small lions, guarding the door.
The portal so outstanding, it has been connected to the "Magistri Comacini" from Northern Italy, but the style seen here is rather rough. The Lombardic master masons mostly carved in a more elegant, softer style (eg Koenigslutter). There are many "interpretations" of all the different icons found here.
There are 14 framed reliefs in Bad Goegging. Peter Leuschner ("Romanische Kirchen in Bayern") refers to late Dr. J. Reichart, an archeologist from nearby Ingolstadt, who divided them in to three groups. Following Dr. Reichart, seven carvings illustrate the seven deadly sins, three depicts scene from the Old and four scenes of the New Testament. I am not completely sure about these interpretations.
In case, the crucifcation frame just seen connects to the "Pilate-frame" on the left side of the portal and these two carvings illustrate the Passion of Christ, then this frame can only be seen as the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus (nimbus) is holding up the cross. His finger points down to the crucification.
This carving is the largest of all - and it is placed "over" the crucification.
La Chaise-Dieu

La Chaise-Dieu was founded in 1043 by Robert de Turlande. It was named "Casa Dei", from which La Chaise-Dieu developed. From the 11th to the 13th century, the abbey experienced rapid and significant development. When the founder died in 1067, already 300 monks lived here. In the Auvergne La Chaise-Dieu gained importance similar to that of the Burgundian Cluny Abbey. The abbey received many donations from noble families and administered 42 daughter monasteries. Popes who visited the abbey include Urban II, Calixt II, Alexander III. and Innocent II. In 1342, Pierre Roger, who had lived as a monk in La Chaise-Dieu, became Pope in Avignon under the name Clement VI. He financed a new building of the abbey church, in which he was finally buried. The building was completed in 1378 under the pontificate of Gregory XI, a nephew of Clement VI.
Since 1516 La Chaise-Dieu, like most other French abbeys, became "in commendam" so the commendatory abbot drew the revenue of the monastery but without fulfilling the duties of the abbot or even residing at the monastery.
Calvinist troops looted the abbey in August 1562. After most of the monastery buildings were destroyed by fire in 1695, they were rebuilt by the monks in the decades that followed. In 1786, Cardinal de Rohan, who was involved in the "Affair of the Diamond Necklace" was exiled to La Chaise-Dieu. While the abbey had 40 monks at that time, religious life ended at the beginning of the French Revolution.
La Chaise-Dieu is known for the tapestries, once woven to embellish the monks´ choir.
They were commissioned by Jacques de Saint-Nectaire and were woven by a Flemish workshop between 1501 and 1518.
The collection includes 14 tapestries of which two are different and may have been ordered by the abbot for his personal use.
The 12 other tapestries constitute a complete continuation of the Annunciation to the Last Judgment. An inventory prior to the Revolution mentions 18 tapestries, so four tapestries have therefore disappeared.
The tapestries were only exhibited during major liturgical feasts. They were rolled up and kept during the troubles during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution.
In 2013 the tapestries were removed. They got restored and returned to the abbey in July 2019. I was lucky to see them in August 2019.
"Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene" can be found twice in La Chaise Dieu.

Plettenberg - Christuskirche

The construction of the late-romanesque hall-church started around 1230. It was dedicated to "St. Lambertus", what is a connection the "Engelbert III von der Mark", a regional noble, who was bishop in Liege, where martyr St. Lambert (aka "Lambert of Maastricht" had been a bishop as well. Engelbert, who later was bishop in Cologne, had a great influence in the area. After the Reformation, the parish converted to Protestantism, but the church was still "St. Lambertus" for a long time. Later, in very sober times, the name was changed to "Evangelische Hauptkirche" (= "Protestant Main Church"). In 1953 a new name was introduced - and since then this is the "Christuskirche".
The late Romanesque southern portal is a masterpiece with strong connections to the older portals found in the region.
Here is the tympanum. The crucification in the centre. Mary left, St. John, holding the bible, right. Compared to other tympana just seen (Affeln, Balve), the cross is quite large. The arms are somehow curved, creating a kind of three-dimensionality. Christ seems concentrated (eyes shut) his arms spread to embrace the onlookers. To the left is the nativity scene. The body of Mary is weathered or chiselled off. The crib, the ox, the ass and Joseph (note the Jewish hat, just like in Balve and Ense) are still clearly visible. To the right the three ladies visiting the tomb, bringing spices (one has a censer!). They are told by a small sitting angel that the tomb is empty.
Pleyben - Saint Germain

"Saint Germain" is in the center of the large "enclos paroissial".
The enclosure comprises of the parish church, the calvary and a funeral chapel/ ossuary.
The "Calvary on Pleyben" is the most massive calvary in Brittany. It was built in 1555 and at that time was attached to the narthex of the church. It was moved to this location in 1738. The calvary was constructed in the shape of a triumphal arch and has three crosses on it. It depicts 30 scenes from Christ´s life, staged on two levels.
To the very left is a "Pieta" under a canopy, Jesus flanked by two soldiers, a person on his knees - the "Denial of Saint Peter", the flagellation, Christ is in the pillory, surrounded by guards, the "Crowning of thorns". Above are the crucification and the resurrection. The soldiers are sleeping.
Trogir - Cathedral of St. Lawrence

Trogir was founded by Greek colonists in the 3rd century BC. In Roman times this was an important harbour town. From the 9th century on Trogir was under Croatian rule and later part of the Byzantine empire. A diocese was established in the 11th century, in 1107 the Hungarian-Croatian King Coloman ("The Bookish", "Kálmán Könyves") granted the autonomy.
Saracen troops conquered Trogir in 1123 and demolished most of it. From 1420 upto 1797 Trogir belonged to the Republic of Venice. For a short while it belonged to the Napoleonic kingdom of Italy, but upto 1918 Trogir was part of the Habsburg Empire.
Trogir is more than 2000 years old. It grew under the influence of the ancient Greeks, the Romans, and the Venetians... Trogir's medieval core, surrounded by walls, comprises (about 10) churches, houses and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Since 1997 the centre of Trogir is a "UNESCO World Heritage Site".
The Cathedral of St. Lawrence was erected from 1213 on the foundations of cathedral destroyed by the Saracens in 1123. Most of the work was done in the 13th century.
This cathedral is world wide known for Master Radovan´s portal. The portal was carved by the local architect and sculptor Master Radovan (and his workshop). It was completed and signed by Radovan in 1240.
In the late 13th century, the outer archivolt was added to the portal.
This archivolt was not carved by Radovan, but by craftsmen of the still existing studio. The scenes have a slightly different style.
These three soldiers are sound asleep and so miss the resurrection of Jesus.
Regensburg - Schottenkloster St. Jakob

A Benedictian monastery was founded by Hiberno-Scottish monks in Regensburg already around 1070. Soon after, the convent moved to a place just outside the city walls and in started to erect first buildings.
The first church, consecrated in 1120, was of such a poor workmanship, that the convent decided to tear it down (except one apse and the flanking towers) and restart the process. The church of today was completed before 1200. It is one of the most important Romanesque structures in Bavaria.
The abbey was a hub for the Irish/Scottish mission to central Europe. Daughter establishments of St. Jakob were founded in Vienna (1155), Erfurt (1136), Wuerzburg (1138), Nuremberg (1140), Constance (1142), Eichstaett (1148), Memmingen (1178), Kiev (!) (late 12th century) and Kelheim (13th century).
WHile the first monks and abbots were Irish, the Scottish period started after the Reformation with Scottish abbot Ninian Vincet (1577-1592). A century later Scottish priests were educated here to do missionary work back in Scotland.
Abbot Benedikt Aburthnot (1737-1820) could avoid the secularisation in 1802 by making clear, that the monastery was a Scottish (not at all Bavarian!) national treasure. It took upto 1814 to incorporate the Scottish monastery into the Bavarian sovereignty. Monastic life finally ended here in 1862, when the buildings were taken over by the bishop, who 10 years later founded a still existing seminary here.
The northern portal ("Schottenportal") is one of the most important (and largest) Romanesque works of art in Germany. It occupies a third of the church´s northern wall and is divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically, plus a small frieze that tops the central arch (the vertical center).
While most authors reckon, that Irish masters created this portal, Marcel Durliat sees parallels to works in Northern Italy, created by the Comacine masters ("Magistri Comacini"). He even connects this portal to the carvings in Linden and Remagen.
The interpretation of such a large and cryptic portal has been controversial since the beginning, what means the 19th century, as only since then Romanesque carvings were seen as works of art (mostly). There was even a theory claiming that such a carving could not have been done during the 12th/13th century, and that it probably was added to the church later. The time of origin is not disputed any longer, but the meaning of figures and symbols. Richard Strobel ("Romanik in Altbayern") has no hard facts, but found out, that left (eastern) side stands for the "Good", while the right side stands for the "Evil". This meanwhile is undisputed.

As seen on the previous shot: the crocodile and the hydrus (snake), what may stand as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ. Following the story from the Physiologus, the crocodile rolls the hydrus in mud, before eating it. Once inside the crocodile's stomach, the hydrus would burst free - and kill the crocodile "from inside".
Below these two mythical creatures, and so probably in the hell´s lowest level are three persons/souls - and a (weathered) mermaid. The trio is well dressed, has short hair (tonsure?) and holds books. So they may be well educated monks, but obviously they followed the mermaid into a sinful life - and so their souls ended here.
In front a weathered lion. The lion´s paws rest on the shoulders of a small human. He will be devoured by the lion within short.
Mozac - Saint-Pierre et Saint-Caprais

Mozac Abbey is one of the oldest monasteries in the Auvergne, dating back into Merovingian times. A legend tells that it was founded by Calminius (later Saint Calmin). He must have been pretty important and well off, as his name is connected to the foundations of three abbeys. He introduced the benedictian rules to the area, and brought (from Rome)a relic of Saint Peter and (from Agen) a relic of Saint Caprasius to Mozac. He got buried in the crypt of this church together with his wife Saint Namadie. Within the 9th century relics of Saint Austremonius, the first bishop of Clermont were transferred to Mozac, so already before Santiago de Compostella was on the map, this was a place of pilgrimage.
In 1095 Mozac abbey got affiliated to Cluny, but was important enough, to have Hugue of Semur, nephew of Hugue of Cluny here as abbot. He was followed by Eustachius, brother of Petrus Venerabilis.
Three churches could be traced here by archeologists, what can be seen today is "Mozac 3", a great church built within the first half of the 12th century.
As most of "Mozac 3" got destroyed by a number earthquakes between 1437 and 1490. Actually only ruins can be seen. Apses, choir, ambulatory, radial chapels, transept and clerestorys were beyond repair, when the early reconstruction started - in gothic style.
Most pillars and capitals of "Mozac 3" are still in place (in situ).
Some of the carvings here are so "perfect", that they seem to be much younger, even baroque, but all are - 12th century - romanesque.

Huesca - San Pedro el Viejo

The Monasterio de San Pedro el Viejo ("Saint Peter the Old") is a former Benedictine monastery built within the 12th century. A church had existed here (built on the place of a Roman temple) since Visigothic times and even, when the Moors hold Huesca, this church was in use.
Christian troops conquered Huesca in 1096 and from 1117 on Benedictines with obvious ties to Cluny reconstructed the church and erected a monasterio here.
Of course the Benedictian monastery needed a decent cloister. This got erected adjoining the church around 1140. Many of the capitals, carved in the style of the "Master of Agüero" (aka "Master of San Juan de la Peña"), are creations done during the renovation of San Pedro el Viejo end of the 19th century.
Here is one of the old, weathered carvings. The left side seen here is well reserved. The carvings of this are all connected to the resurrection.
I learned from information, given in Huesca, that here Pontius Pilatus (seated on a throne) is discussing the issue about the tomb with jewish priests. There are many legends around Pilatus, so this may refer to one of them. To the right are three sleeping soldiers (in chain mails), watched by an angel above them.
