Saint-Julien-Chapteuil - Saint-Julien

20 Jan 2020 114
At the end of the 11th century Benedictine monks, from La Chaise-Dieu founded a priory here. The first Romanesque church (1130) consisted of a three-nave nave and a transept. This church got altered and redesigned in Gothic style in the 17th century. Due to the increase of population the church got expanded in the 19th century, when the town had about 3000 inhabitants (today 1900). Then the nave was expanded and the facade was erected, reminding on the facade of the Cathedral of the near Le Puy. It looks like Saint-Julien-Chapteuil has a long tradition in processions. - I reached Saint-Julien-Chapteuil the first time of my hike from Geneva to Conques, following the "Chemin de Compostelle". I do remember that it was so very hot and I had difficulties to walk up to the church, as the mountain is very steep. And when I had reached the church, I rested inside this cool nave.

Caltanissetta - Semana Santa

We had witnessed the solemn procession in Agrigento, that had started at midnight in Agrigento. But the Holy Week traditions were continuing. Early in the morning, very well dressed men met near the portal of the cathedral in Caltanisetta. Soon after a procession started, led by two boys.

Agrigento - Semana Santa

The Holy Week traditions in Sicily are mostly the legacy of the 17th-century Spanish domination of the island, and still bear a close resemblance to current Easter traditions in Southern Spain. About midnight the solemn procession in Agrigento started., Thousands of people, many in costumes were involved, there was music, there were prayers... It was very impressing.

Vicofertile - San Geminiano

05 Oct 2016 174
Vicofertile, located at the old Via Francigena, is meanwhile is a small suburb of the City of Parma. A church probably existed in Vicofertile already within the 9th century, but the church mentioned in a document from 1039 was smaller than the church seen here. Excavations found the foundations about 50cms under the floor of San Geminiano. Today´s church was erected around 1200. The roof burned down in 1325, but got rebuilt soon after. The church got modified a couple of times, but a a restoration undertaken in the early 20th century got rid of all interior Baroque additions. This baptismal font is a real surprise here. While the capitals are rather clumsy, this polished font is really smooth and elegant. It is 68cms high and has a diameter of 98cms, so it was probably used for immersion. Five figures "walk around" the font in a procession. Seen here are four of them.
