Behind the pretty new Neo-Byzantine parish church (see previous uploads) stands this round building, erected by Lombards after in 751 King Aistulf had conquered the Exarchate of Ravenna and so ended the Byzantine influence here. This rotunda, named "delubro", was erected mid 8th century, when the area had been transferred to the Nonantola Abbey.
It is claimed locally, that this is the most ancient stone monument in the whole Province of Bologna. It was probably used as a baptistery first. In the 12th century it was used as the base of the bell tower - and remained so upto 1951, when the old tower was demolished.
The rotunda is not exactly round, but has an elliptical floorplan (4,40 m x 3,85 m). The door was open... The building has a small apse, where the white bench is.
It looks like a little gazebo, where neighbours meet in the evening to have a chat and a glass of wine.

Legends tell, that Saint Tertullian, Bishop of Bologna, founded a church here. Local information goes even further, claiming the first church was may have been erected over a temple of the Celtic God Cernunnos.
It is proven, that a Benedictian convent existed here in 1035. The parish church was built within the 18th century. The rotunda dates to the 8th century. After the Benedictian monks withdrew, Servite Friars moved in - and in 1322 started to build the campanile - on top of the rotunda.

The Basilica di San Vincenzo and the Battistero di San Giovanni are on a hill in Galliano, just outside Cantù.
The church was consecrated in 1007, but that marks the end of a rebuilding process. This was sponsored by Ariberto da Intimiano, who was Bishop of Milano from 1018 on - and a strong supporter of Emperor Henry II and his successor Conrad II.
The large baptistery next to the basilica was probably erected at the same time. In the center of the "Battistero di San Giovanni" is a rectangular room, "created" by the four apses, seen from outside.
Looking down from the matronaeum on the second floor to one of the four apses.

From the matronaeum on the second floor, women could watch the baptism.
The walls look very rough, but there are some traces of plaster and paint.

These rough stairs lead up to the matronaeum on the second floor.
Climbing up the stairs I felt like inside a nuraghe, but these megalithic buildings in Sardinia are thousands of years older than the baptistery.

The octagonal "Battistero di San Giovanni Battista" was erected in the 11th century on the foundations of an older baptistery, that had been rectangular, dated to the 6th century. The "battistero" was locked. I learned, that inside is a "primitive" octagonal baptismal font with a diameter of 1,30m.
