Venice (ital. Venezia) is one of the most important tourist destinations worldwide with about 30 million visitors each year.
I have already uploaded dozens of shots from previous visits, so I´ll try to cut down the number of uploads this time.
Murano consists of seven individual islands separated by canals and connected by eleven bridges.
Tradition knows, that the foundation of the church is attributed to a vow made by Otto I after he was rescued from a sea storm. The present church with its campanile was completed in 1140. The interior of the basilica is famous for its colorful mosaic floor from 1140. I have taken and uploaded many shots earlier, that you can find.
I had learned about whalebones in the basilica. It took me a while to find them behind the altar.

Here is the apse area showing the solitary figure of Mary on a golden mosaic background.

Leaving Murano. The island is not only known for the wonderful floor mosaics of "Santa Maria e San Donato" (see the campanile) , but much more for for the traditions of glass making. Well maybe will focus on on that story next timem but I doubt that..

The first church probably existed here, on the siland of Murona, already in the 7th century. A large church, named "Santa Mariae plebis Murianensis" was erected within the 10th century. Legends connect the building to Otto I, and it is proven that it was completed in 999.
This church got rebuild around 1040. In 1125, the relics of St. Donatus, that had been attained by the Venitian forces, led by Doge Domenico Michele, were translated to this church. The church and the campanile are built with red bricks.
Santa Maria e San Donato, once the cathedral of the Bishops of Murano and Torcellino, is known for the fantastic floor mosaics and cosmatesque decorations, that, following the inscription, seen here, was completed 1140.
The mosaics cover the complete floor of the church.
The "Funeral of Fox", going back to one of Aesop´s fabels. The story (the fox only only pretends to be dead - and in the end..) was as well told in the very popular "Le Roman de Renart" written down around 1170 in Northern France.
Similar mosaics are in Venice (San Marco) and Ravenna (San Giovanni Evangelista).

These works are called "cosmatesque" after the Roman family Cosmati, who were the leading family workshop of marble craftsmen for generations. It is said, that Laurenzo Cosmati (~ 1150) was apprentice of Greek / Byzantine Masters. The floor seen here was probably completed before Laurenzo Cosmati was born. This floor was done by by Greek/Byzantine Masters.

Seen in the apse (far away) is a Maria Orante (as well before 1140).

The relics of the saint are stored in a sarcophagus. Here are displayed as well four ribs of the dragon, San Donato once killed. The ribs are about a metre long. Unfortunately we could not see them. It is believed that the ribs are from a large Pleistocene animal.
The western side with the main portal of the church, once the cathedral of the Bishops of Murano and Torcellino, is very "sober". The eastern apses, that could be seen from the lagoon, should obviously impress the visitors.

Venice (ital. Venezia) is one of the most important tourist destinations worldwide with about 30 million visitors each year.
As each tourist takes at least 100 photos (minimum!) in Venice 3000000000 photos are taken here per year, what means more than 8 millions per day. Many of them are uploaded and can be found in the web.

A day on Murano, once known as a center for glassmaking ("Venetian glass", "Murano glass"), can be very relaxing.
