Beaune - Sarcophagus

Before Beaune became the center of the wine-business in Burgundy and way before it got a town privilege in 1203, it was a Celtic sanctuary around a mystic spring. The Romans later erected a fort here and after they left a small Chistian community will have lived here, as this sarcophagus with Christian symbols is dated to the end of the 6th century. It was found with more than 300 tombs, when in 1987/88, near the old city walls, a underground parking lot was constructed an so an old necropole got unearthed.

Saint-Nicolas was erected in the 12th century just outside the northern city walls to serve a growing suburbian settlement. The facade and the tower date to the 12th century. The nave and the apse are at least a century younger and already Gothic.

Saint-Nicolas was erected in the 12th century just outside the northern city walls to serve a growing suburbian settlement. The facade and the tower date to the 12th century, while the nave is younger. The tympanum depicts Saint Nicholas and the three poor daughters. Jacobus da Varagine knew this story and wrote it down in the medieval bestseller "Golden Legend" (aka "Legenda Aurea"). Saint Nicholas helped a father of three daughters who had lost everything and feared he would have to prostitute the girls. Saint Nicholas came to the man's window three nights in a row, and each night he tossed in a bag of gold.

The building of this church, which is a parish church since the French Revolution started in romanesque style within the 12th century. Looking down the nave to the choir, aisles to the sides, behind the pillars. The walls have three levels, probably like Cluny III. Lots of light is in the building, as even the clearstory, under the vaults, have windows.

Beaune - Collégiale Notre-Dame de Beaune

The collegiate was founded in Beaune within the 10th century, the building of this church, which is parish church since the French Revoltion started in romanesque style within the 12th century. There are many carvings in this church. This capital (for me) is strange. The style is somehow unique. The characters are not in any kind of scenery, but seem to be glued on to the surface. God is looking out of a cloud (cannot be hair) blessing somebody. Under his arm, a person with a nimbus. As most people hold round objects - and there are three of these objects (already) on that nimbus, this depicts probably the stoning of St. Stephanus.

There are many carvings in this church. This carving of this capital reminds me on the style of Gislebertus in Autun, but I cannot "read" it. A very nicely carved scenery (forest?) in the background. In the foreground a holy person (nimbus) puts something/somebody into a basket, supported by a sheep. Any suggestions?

Beaune - Hôtel-Dieu

Tired tourists in front of the "Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune" (aka "Hospices de Beaune") in Beaune. The "Hôtel-Dieu" was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins as a hospital for the poor. The complex actually served as a hospital until the 1970s, when the largest part was converted into a museum. Over the centuries generous benefactors made donations to the hospital, not only woods and works of art but as well vineyards. Since 1859 "Les Trois Glorieuses" takes place here in November. This is a three-day festival and charity wine auction. The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune owns around 61 hectares of vineyard land, much of this classified Grand and Premier cru.
