Montbozon - Boucherie

The name Montbozon probably dates back to around 800 and goes back to Count Bozon, a grandson of Charlemagne. A noble family from Montbozon has been documented since the 12th century. Only around 500 residents were unable to keep the butcher's shop open.

The oppidum of the Celtic Alobroges became a Roman colony about 47 BC under Julius Caesar, but the Allobroges managed to expel the Romans. The exiles moved north and founded the colony of Lugdunum (today's Lyon). During the early Empire, Vienna regained all its former privileges as a Roman colony. The city flourished and became the second capital of southern Gaul during the Roman Empire. The first Christians lived in Vienne around 100 AD. In the 3rd century, the city became a bishopric. After the death of the childless last Burgundian king Rudolf III. Vienne fell in 1032 to the German king Conrad II and thus to the Holy Roman Empire. In the 12th century, Vienne became the capital of the Dauphiné. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Vienne experienced an economic boom, numerous houses were built in the half-timbered style of the time, and the cathedral was completed. During the Wars of Religion, the city was fought over and frequently looted. Vienne has a Lidl supermarket just a few hundred meters from the city center. The traces of such a development are visible.

Allègre - Boucherie

A settlement, named Grazac, is known here since 946. It got later named after the noble House of Alègre, who erected a large castle overlooking the village, that was prosperous and even held fairs and markets here. Today Allègre, still known for the (now ruined) castle only has a population of less than 1000 and suffers from the rural exodus. The population is in decline and the Aldi- and Lidl-supermarkets in the area just strangle the small local businesses.

Behind every given up shop is a tragedy. Rural exodus is a big problem for small villages. German discounters Lidl and Aldi have opened about 2500 supermarkets in France since 1988. There is just no future..

Samer - Boucherie

The small town of Samer developed around the Abbaye Saint-Wulmer (founded in 668) and so the Flemish name for the town is still Sint-Wulmaars. The abbey meanwhile is in ruins and where a boucherie was once is now the office of a nurse.

The "Boucherie" was closed in the early afternoon.

Nice - Butcher´s

Nice offers many shops, but many of them are not that interesting, as (at least for me!) all Zara- and H+M-shops look the same. Worldwide. But then there are great shops, standing out and catching my eye. This small blood-red butcher´s shop is one of them. Calves' kidneys and liver are a the special of the day. I have to admit, that I did not buy the kidneys.

Liège - Grande Boucherie Moderne

Three languages are "officially" spoken in the Kingdom of Belgium: Dutch, French and German. Liège is part of the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. So the butchery here is a "Boucherie".
