Veurne was settlement in possession of the Saint Bertin Abbey in Saint-Omer. The place got fortified against Viking raids around 890. A count´s chapel existed here. After the relics of Saint Walburga had been transferred to Veurne in the early 9th century the chapel got replaced by a larger Romanesque church. This church was then dedicated to Saint Walburga, an English missionary to the Frankish Empire, Saint Willibald´s and Saint Winibald´s sister and Saint Boniface´s niece. A chapter of secular canons was related to the church, when mid 13th century the Romanesque choir got pulled down and the erection of a Gothic choir started. It was completed in the early 14th century. When the old nave burned down in 1353 fruitless attemps were undertaken, to built a large Gothic nave with a massive tower on the west. After the French Revolution the building was sold for demolition, but a yaer later, Veurne´s population bought the church back and the restoration could start within the 19th century. Two names carved into the canon´s choir stall. 1715??

Seen to the left are the foundations of the tower, that never got built.

Eichstaett - Cathedral

26 Nov 2012 229
A church was erected here already within the 8th century. It was built by Saint Willibald, who was the first bishop of the Diocese of Eichstaett. Saint Willibald was born in England into a remarkable family. His father was Saint Richard of Wessex, his brother was Saint Winibald, his sister was Saint Walburga - and Saint Boniface (who founded the Diocese of Eichstaett) may have been his uncle. Willibald was a very travelled man, he has not only been in Rome, but as well visited the Holy Land. His shrine is in this cathedral. The cathedral seen today is 98 meters long. It was erected in Gothic style between 1256 and 1510 and so covers the Gothic style from the very beginning to it´s famboyant heyday. The western wing of the Gothic cloister widens to this large two nave hall - the "Mortuarium". It was used as a burial place for he noble members of the cathedral chapter from the consecration in 1498 to the secularisation in the early 19th century. The first and the last of the pillars are of extraordenary quality.

Facing west - into the choir, where the tomb of Saint Willibald is placed. The choir is under renovation and so hidden behind the scaffolding. In 1256 the construction of the cathedral started here. This part was completed (1269), so the vaulting is still very simple.

Seen here is the northern wing, with it´s unusual ribbed vaulting.

From the Romanesque cathedral, that had been here, before this church was built, only the two towers remained.
