The city of Calbe was first mentioned in 936 under the name of Calvo in a document from King Otto I. It is assumed that a settlement probably existed as early as the 8th or early 9th century.
Due to the good traffic situation in the eastern part of what was then Germany as a starting point for trade with the colonized Slavic areas, Calbe was granted market rights around 1160. To 1680 Calbe belonged to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg and the Archbishops had their summer seat at Calbe Castle.
An early St. Stephani Church was probably built in the 10th century in connection with the donation from the royal court to the new Archdiocese of Magdeburg. Later, an early Gothic basilica made of sandstone was built, which was later modified in the High Gothic style and part of which has been preserved as the rectangular chancel of the current church.
In 1323 the church became part of the monastery, which at the end of the 15th century led to disputes between the citizens fighting for urban independence and the monastery. In the 15th century, it was decided to build a spacious late-Gothic hall church to accommodate the growing population, which was completed in 1495. The total height of the towers is about 57 meters.

In the early 20th century, large post offices in Germany were mostly built in this brick architecture.

Founded in a loop of the Doubs River, the town played an important role during the Roman Empire period under the name of Vesontio.
Since 1032 Besançon and the entire County of Burgundy became part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Archbishop Hugo von Salins, with imperial support, became ruler of the city, which he led into a period of prosperity. After his death in 1066, however, it falls into a long crisis caused by succession struggles. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the population defied the power of the archbishops and finally gained their municipal independence in 1290. Besançon retained the status of a free city for almost 400 years. The Free Counts of Burgundy, who had gained dominion over Franche-Comté, became the protector of the Free City, which prospered during this period. Louis XI confirmed the town charter in early 1481 and ordered the university to be transferred from Dole to Besançon.
With the beginning of the Renaissance, Franche-Comté fell back to the German Empire. Emperor Charles V fortified Besançon and made the city a bulwark for his empire.
Communication became very important with industrialization. Post offices were often "temples" of the new technology.
