The basilica was built between 1481 and 1560, following the sack of the town by French troops of Charles I d'Amboise and the fires of 1477 and 1479. It is an example of late Gothic architecture. The tympanum depicts the coronation of the Virgin. An icon that was very popular during "Gothic" times.

Gray had an important harbour on the river Saone and the 16th century was a kind of golden age for the town, when through the trade on the river money came in. Then Gray could afford to have built such an town hall in Renaissance style.

Gray - Orchids

Just opposite the "Basilique Notre-Dame de Gray", where since the 17th century a miraculous statue of "Our Lady" is venerated, somebody loves orchids and has arranged the flowerpots in a former shop window. There was even a surveillance camera once..
