A settlement was located here, that was destructed in 1325 by the Lithuanians. It was rebuilt and it was granted town privileges in 1364 by order of the Bishop of Warmia.
The town was built with a central square and the parish church of St. Anne. North of the church was the bishop's castle in which the burgrave resided.
It joined the Prussian Confederation in 1440 and in 1466 the town was confirmed as part of the Kingdom of Poland. It was the place of fights of the Polish–Teutonic War of 1519–1521. In 1521 the Teutonic Knights launched artillery fire on the town but had to withdraw.
In summer there is a festival called "Łączy kultury"
(Culture unites) in Barczewo. Water music is best when listened from a kayak.

Olsztyn - Szlak Św. Jakuba
From 1230 to 1283 the Teutonic Order conquered the entire territory of the Slavic Prussians. In 1243 the bishop of Warmia received 1/3 of the territory of his diocese for his maintenance. The town was founded in 1353 under the name of Allensteyn by the chapter of the cathedral of Warmia on its territory. At that time, the castle was already under construction.
In 1454 the town joined the Prussian Confederation against the Teutonic Order. The townspeople captured the castle and recognized the sovereignty of the Polish king, but a year later the town was reconquered by the Teutonic Order. During the war the town was in flames several times. By the peace treaty in 1466, Olsztyn and the entire Duchy of Warmia came under Polish sovereignty.
For centuries the city was an important centre of trade, crafts, science and administration in the Warmia region.

Outines - Saint-Nicolas

We had seen Saint Nicolas at nightfall, when we returned home, now we were back and could enter. The church was erected in the early 16th century, the oldest wood fates back to 1612. The construction seems similar to the timbered halls of the area.
One of the "Chemins de Saint Jacques" passes Outines as well as the famous "Via Francigena", that runs from Canterbury to Rome.
On the backpack (left) was a "coquille", so the pilgrim was on his way to Santiago. A long way to walk from here! Ultreia!
Léhon - Abbaye Saint-Magloire

The abbey, dedicated to Saint Magloire of Dol, a Welsh monk who became Bishop of Dol-de-Bretagne and ended his life on the island of Sark (~575). The abbey was founded in the 9th century with a strong support of Nominoë, the legendary first Duke of Brittany. In 910, the Vikings raid the area and loot and destroy the monastery. The monks had left already. They transferred the relics of Saint-Magloire to Paris, where they founded a new Abbaye Saint-Magloire.
The monks returned to Léhon and started to rebuilt from 1008 on. The abbey flourished, but was dependent from the Abbaye de Marmoutier (Tours), what caused trouble with all bishops around. In 1767 the last six monks left. The crumbling buildings were sold after the French Revolution and the church now serves the parish.
Some of the formerly conventual buildings, around the old cloister, are used as the mayor´s office. The museum was closed, so the young lady, having a "Coquille Saint-Jacques" attached to her backpack, continued the long walk to Santiago de Compostela, about 1400 kms from Léhon. Ultreia!!
