The Roman theatre here is the second-largest surviving in the world. Gubbio became very powerful in the Middle Ages, when Gubbio sent 1000 knights to fight in the First Crusade. Later the city was engaged in wars against the surrounding towns of Umbria. Gubbio is built on the very steep slope. Lifts convey the tourists up to the Piazza Grande from the valley floor. Walking up to the cathedral, looking down to the Palazzo dei Consoli, built between 1332 and 1338.

In winter an ice rink is installed on the Piazza Grande, so the ambitious kids can try loop and flip jumps in front of the Palazzo dei Consoli. The palazzo was built between 1332 and 1338. The locals claim, that this is one of the most beautiful public halls in Italy.

Opposite San Francesco is the long "Logge dei Tiratori", originally a Hospital, erected in 1326 and adjacent to the small church of Santa Maria dei Laici (seen on the left end). The Woolworkers’ Guild wanted to build, above the hospital, a kind of covered attic, where it would be possible to dry and "stretch" ("tirare")pieces of cloth. Finally the Logge dei Tiratori was built at the beginning of the 17th century.

St. Francis of Assisi, who was closely associated with Gubbio, supposedly was once housed in a room adjacent to the church. San Francesco may be work of Benedictian monk Fra Bevignate, who engineered the aqueduct supplying water to the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia. Ottaviano Nelli created the frescoes of the left apse 1410-1415. "Mary in childbed", the two midwives prepare Jesus´ "First Bath".
