Jazz à Vienne - Fred Wesley & the new JBs

27 Apr 2023 1 80
"Jazz à Vienne" features 250 concerts each year, 1,000 artists, 200,000 festival-goers. The 41st edition took place from June 29 to July 13, 2022. ALL NIGHT JAZZ is the final (and hardest) night of the festival as it starts around 8 pm and ends when the sun is up. Or later. Six groups performed that night, but I didn't see them all... I'm too old for events like this... Sorry! - Trombonist Fred Wesley (*1943) began his career as a teenager in the band of Ike and Tina Turner, worked with James Brown in the '60s, and was the bandleader of the JBs in the '70s. He later was a member of George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic and joined the Count Basie Orchestra after this episode. He is now the frontman of the "new" JBs, a band with deep roots as the "Original" J.B.'s were led by Fred Wesley as James Brown's Band in 1970. The J.B.'s played on some of Brown's most intensely funk recordings and, of course, toured with Brown. Now they are back! Here is the sound www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfKOOIyT-C0

Vence - Sister Sledge

09 Jan 2020 114
Since more than 20 years Vence hosts the festival "Nuits du Sud". Vence is a wonderful village in the hills between Nice and Antibes. The summernights there are warm and with the music they are really magic. I have to admit, that I did not like Sister Sledge in the late 70s and early 80s. For me, the sisters seemed synthetic, way too much disco-style. Four sisters formed the original "Sister Sledge". Two of them, Debbie and Camille Sledge, are still on the stage now supported by the next generation Thaddeus and David Sledge. But before I booked the tickets I listened to the music again - and found this is really funky music, just hidden in a glittering disco attire. Their performance in Vence was great, especially as obviously anybody in the audience could join in singing "We are family.." and so a giant jumping, dancing and singing family evolved, we were all "Lost in music".
