Montreuil-sur-Mer - Abbaye Saint-Saulve

The name "Montreuil" derives from the Latin word "monasteriolum", what means "small monastery". Legends tell that a convent existed here in very early times. It is proven, that in 926 monks from Landévennec (Finistère / Bretagne) fled the Norman invasions and settled here.
They founded an abbey, that got dedicated to Sant Salve, after his relics were transferred to the monastery in 1111. A large Romanesque church, with an ambulatory for the many pilgrims, was built within the 12th century.
This church (and 5 more in Montreuil) collapsed in 1467, when a "natural desaster" hit the town. What exactly happened is still unclear. Earthquake? Whatever was left or rebuilt of the town then got vandalized by the army of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who, Holy Roman Emperor, ruled Habsburg Netherland.
The former abbey church, seen here is the result of many reconstructions. The lower part of the tower is probably from the 12th century.

In Roman times Bononia (now "Boulogne-sur-Mer") was the major Roman port for trade and communication with Britain. Caesar's invasions of Britain started right here.
From the 9th century on Boulogne was the capital of the "County of Boulogne". Godfrey of Bouillon and Baldwin I of Jerusalem, prominent figures in the First Crusade, were both Counts of Boulogne.
The old town, located of a hill, is surrounded by remparts since the 13th century.
After the death of Count Renaud of Boulogne (1227 - suicide after 13 years in prison) the castle in the inner city was given up (see "belfry") and a new one was built near the remparts. It is seen to the right, while in the back drop is the dome of the Notre Dame Basilica. Today the castle hosts the local museum.

The basilica was built between 1827 and 1875 on the ruins of the old cathedral, that was destroyed soon after the Revolution.

The origins of the building, now housing the library, go back to the 13th century, when this was the Hospice of St. Catherine, that was open for the pilgrims. In 1628 a Convent of the Annonciades, an order founded in 1501 by Joan de Valois (aka "Joan of France"), briefly the wife of King Louis XII of France.

The belfry, behind the "Hôtel de ville" is the last remaining structure of a fort, erected by Renaud de Dammartin, Count of Boulogne from 1191 to 1214, a powerful opponent of Philip II of France. His successors erected a still existing castle, near the remparts, at the edge of the old town. The octogonal top of the belfry was added in 1734, after the medieval spire had burnt down.

The small town of Samer developed around the Abbaye Saint-Wulmer (founded in 668) and so the Flemish name for the town is still Sint-Wulmaars. The abbey meanwhile is in ruins.
Saint-Martin was erected within the 16th century. Inside is this baptismal font, dated to the 11th century. The font is damaged, but very unusual for that age.
