Old Romney - St Clement

Old Romney, only aboun 3.0 km inland from New Romney, lies on what was once an island in the former estuary of the River Rother.
The parish dates back to ancient times when Old Romney commenced the primitive settlement of Romney Marsh. St Clement's Church is built on an artificial mound to protect it from floodwater. It is thought the original church was built here in the 8th century.
In the 11th or 12th century the Saxon church was replaced by an early Norman church, aisleless and with a square-ended chancel. It was enlarged in the 13th century. The present building, mostly of the 13th century, has a nave and chancel, and there are north and south chapels. There is a small tower, with south-east and south-west buttresses, in the south-west corner, and a north porch.
Patrixbourne - St. Mary

Patrixbourne is just 5 km from Canterbury. In the Domesday Book Patrixbourne was just like Barfrestone held by Bishop Odo, but it was transferred finally to Merton Priory - until the Reformation.
The parish church dates from the late Norman period. It is just like St. Nicholas in Barfrestone built of flint and Caen Stone imported from France - and it looks like the same artists or at least the same workshop created the carvings.
There is a large Gothic carving.
The Adoration of the Magi and the Last Supper fill the lower row. The upper row contains the Kiss of Judas, the Flagellation, the Condemnation by Pilate, the Carrying of the Cross and in the centre the Crucifixion

Redekin - Dorfkirche

Redekin is a small village south of Jerichow. It has been known since 1144 and was the property of the Jerichow Monastery.
The Romanesque brick church with the wide westwork dates from around 1200 and is influenced by the church of Jerichow Monastery. Experienced craftsmen who had also worked in Jerichow probably built here.
The church was locked, but a very friendly gentleman arrived with the key and so we learned a lot about the eventful history of the place and the church. Thank you!

Altenstadt - St. Michael

Approaching the small, unimpressive village of Altenstadt the visitor will find a really impressing romanesque basilica. The church is way too big for the village.
The original name of the village was "Scongoe". Founded on a hill over the river Lech, it controlled the old roman "highway" from Augsburg to Italy - and over the time got wealthy and proud. So they started to build this St.Michael-church between 1170 and 1220.
Just after the church was completed, discussions started and the whole village moved (for strategic reasons) to a new place, just a few kilometres away and started the (still existing) "Schongau", naming the old place "Altenstadt" (= old town). As there were no people to care for the abandoned church, and over the many years (fortunately) no money, to change it into gothic, baroque or rococo style, purity has survived here.
I have uploaded already many photos taken in Altenstadt during prior visits. So just a few "new" photos now.
Arezzo - Santa Maria della Pieve

Santa Maria della Pieve was erected over the remains of an earlier church from the early 12th century on. It was was the stronghold of the city's struggle against its feudal bishops, who were building the nearby Cathedral and a palace, that was rather a castle just outside the city walls.
It took about two centuries to complete Santa Maria della Pieve, and so there is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Most unusual is the the facade faces this small street (today "Corso Italia"), while the apse borders to the Piazza Grande.
Bright light inside the church. The "open" crypt, below the risen choir can be seen from here. Over the crossing is a large dome.

Venice (ital. Venezia) is one of the most important tourist destinations worldwide with about 30 million visitors each year.
As each tourist takes at least 100 photos (minimum!) in Venice 3000000000 photos are taken here per year, what means more than 8 millions per day. Many of them are uploaded and can be found in the web.

The interior of St. Mark's Basilica´s is absolutely overwhelming. People taking photos are frowned about by the otherwise friendly guardians. As I could not find a pov in the nave, I climbed up to the gallery.
