In the Roman Empire, the city was known as "Emerita Augusta", the capital of the province of Lusitania. It was founded in 25 BC by Emperor Augustus as a colony for the veteran soldiers ("emeritus") of the Roman legions. The city was very important in Roman Hispania. It was endowed with all the comforts of a large Roman city and served as the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania. For centuries, until the fall of the Roman Empire, Mérida was an important economic, military, and cultural center.
Following invasions from the Visigoths, Mérida remained an important city of the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania in the 6th century. In 713, the Arabs conquered the city and devastated it. Even under Islamic rule, Mérida remained a bishop's seat until it was moved to Santiago de Compostela in 1119.
In 1230 the Christian troops under Alfonso IX conquered Mérida during the Reconquista.
I love these laundromats!

Florentina was established in Roman times as a settlement for veteran soldiers. The name had changed already when young Charlemagne conquered the town in 774. It became part of the Duchy of Tuscany, with Lucca as the capital. Around 1000 Margrave Hugo chose Florence as residency instead of Lucca. After the death of Matilda of Tuscany (1115), the Florentines formed a republic ruled by a council. The town prospered, despite a constant fight between the different factions and noble families.
In the 15th century, Florence was among the largest and wealthiest cities in Europe. This was when the Medici family entered the political scene. As a dynasty of art-loving, power-hungry bankers, they made Florence the birthplace of the Renaissance.
The more and longer I have traveled - the more I loved launderettes, (especially when I was walking). There is a relaxing hour to spend at least, waiting for the washing machine and listening to the dryer. It´s such a good feeling to know, that all socks, pants, and shirts in the backpack have this fresh smell. Now I don't walk long distances any longer as I drive, but I still love that smell.

Venice (ital. Venezia) is one of the most important tourist destinations worldwide with about 30 million visitors each year.
I have already uploaded dozens of shots from previous visits, so I´ll try to cut down the number of uploads this time.

Many years ago, I spent a couple of weeks in Lyon, trying to learn French with the support of a French Language School (Lyon Bleu). It was a pretty mediocre success, but I liked Lyon so much, that since then I do return, just to stroll the streets, watch the Rhone - and have a great dinner.
About once per week, I walked to this laverie and washed my clothes. I have always loved to hang around in these laundromats. The mesmerizing noise, the fresh smell and the wheels, that go round and round..

The more I travelled - the more I loved launderettes, especially, when I was hiking. There is a relaxing hour to spend at least, waiting for the washing machine and another half an hour to listen to the dryer... And after that all the stuff is clean and has a nice smell.

The more and the longer I have travelled - the more I loved launderettes. Launderettes are meeting and melting points. Here the weary traveller will meet locals. There is an hour to spend at least, waiting for the washing machine. Talk is cheap. For the tourist all the locals have interesting stories to listen to and for the locals this stranger in the launderette is interesting. What is he doing in here? Where do you stay? What do you work? How is your life? Where will you be tomorrow? Launderettes - are definitely underestimated!

I remember that there is a "clean machine" in Penny Lane. Here are some more clean machines.
