From the tower of the church you can see the Elbe river west of Sandau. Here you can cross the river, which is about 200 meters wide, by ferry. As early as 1272, the margraves of Ask allowed the town of Sandau to operate a "free ferry". Today's cable ferry can transport up to twelve cars at the same time.
